This book is about the engineering of Digital Twins (DTs) of cyber-physical systems (CPSs). It goes behind the glossy image of DTs to help researchers and advanced professionals to ask and answer the fundamental questions underpinning the development of a DT. What are the foundational concepts of the DT? How do different engineering disciplines interact in creating a DT? How should the physical and digital worlds be connected, and how do the imperfections and faults inherent in both worlds affect the DT's qualities? How can we use a DT to support decisions, and how do we maintain it through life? To this end, the book is structured in five parts: "Foundations" introduces the DT concept, the potential benefits of DTs seen from a business perspective, and foundations for DT engineering. "Models and Data" presents the range of models and data that form the core assets of DTs for CPSs. It covers ways in which models can be produced and calibrated, and considers how data is derived from a CPS and communicated to its DT. Next, "Services for Digital Twins" details some of the main services that a DT provides by building on the assets of models and data, including visualisation, fault detection and diagnosis and support for decision-making. "Realising Digital Twins" then covers the realisation of DTs, including a platform allowing engineers to construct DTs from reusable components. Case studies in food production, robotics and marine engineering are presented using a systematic framework that aligns with the DT engineering concepts introduced in the earlier parts of the book. Eventually, "Advanced Topics in Digital Twins" introduces advanced topics in delivering dependable DT-enabled systems, focusing on security and privacy, the capacity for autonomy, and a range of open research topics. This book aims at researchers in DT technology and design, including advanced (master and doctoral) students, as well as engineering practitioners aiming to develop DTs. The most common techniques described in the main text will be accessible via open-source projects, including further DT examples, exercises and solutions, as well as pointers to emerging standards, frameworks and platforms. Classroom materials, exercises and solutions are available to lecturers through a dedicated Web site.
Intelligent and sustainable manufacturing is a broad category of manufacturing that employs computer-integrated manufacturing, high levels of adaptability and rapid design changes, digital information technology, and more flexible technical workforce training. Other goals sometimes include fast changes in production levels based on demand, optimization of the production system, efficient production, and recyclability. This handbook provides compiled knowledge of intelligent and sustainable manufacturing within the context of Industry 4.0. along with tools, principles, and strategies. Handbook of Intelligent and Sustainable Manufacturing: Tools, Principles, and Strategies offers recent developments, future outlooks, and advanced and analytical modeling techniques of intelligent and sustainable manufacturing with examples backed up by experimental and numerical data. It bridges the gap between R&D in intelligent and sustainable manufacturing–related fields and presents case studies and solutions alongside social and green environmental impact. The handbook includes a wide range of advanced tools and applications with modeling results and explains how different internet technologies integrate the manufacturing approach with people, products, and complex systems. By encompassing advanced technologies such as digital twins, big data informatics, artificial intelligence, nature-inspired algorithms, IoT, Industry 4.0, simulation approaches, analytical strategies, quality tools, roots and pillars, diagnostic tools, and methodical strategies, this handbook provides the most up-to-date and advanced information source available. This handbook will help industries and organizations to implement intelligent manufacturing and move towards the sustainability of manufacturing practices. It will also serve as a reference for senior graduate-level courses in mechanical, production, industrial, and aerospace engineering and a value-added asset to libraries of all technical institutions.
The problems related to the process of industrialisation such as biodiversity depletion, climate change and a worsening of health and living conditions, especially but not only in developing countries, intensify. Therefore, there is an increasing need to search for integrated solutions to make development more sustainable. The United Nations has acknowledged the problem and approved the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. On 1st January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Agenda officially came into force. These goals cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. The Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals comprehensively addresses the SDGs in an integrated way. It encompasses 17 volumes, each one devoted to one of the 17 SDGs. This volume addresses SDG 12, namely "Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns" and contains the description of a range of terms, which allows a better understanding and fosters knowledge. Concretely, the defined targets are: Implement the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns, all countries taking action, with developed countries taking the lead, taking into account the development and capabilities of developing countries Achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources Halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses Achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water and soil in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment Substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle Promote public procurement practices that are sustainable, in accordance with national policies and priorities Ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature Support developing countries to strengthen their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production Develop and implement tools to monitor sustainable development impacts for sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products Rationalize inefficient fossil-fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption by removing market distortions, in accordance with national circumstances, including by restructuring taxation and phasing out those harmful subsidies, where they exist, to reflect their environmental impacts, taking fully into account the specific needs and conditions of developing countries and minimizing the possible adverse impacts on their development in a manner that protects the poor and the affected communities Editorial Board Medani P. Bhandari, Luciana Londero Brandli, Morgane M. C. Fritz, Ulla A. Saari, Leonardo L. Sta Romana
