Section 8 Homeownership. HUD's Section 8 housing vouchers are normally used to subsidize the rental housing expenses of eligible recipients. However, HUD offers a way for Section 8 voucher recipients to have their homeownership expenses subsidized when they qualify to purchase homes. If you wish to purchase your first home but need help meeting the monthly mortgage and other homeownership expenses, there a program that will help you it is called the Homeownership Voucher Program. Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher eligibility is based on income, not assets. So, it is possible to own a house or other real estate and still qualify for Section 8. However, income for the purposes of determining Section 8 eligibility must include the income you earn from these assets. Although this program is primarily designed for working families, elderly and disabled persons and families also qualify. Current participants include single and two-parent families, grandparents and single individuals. The minimum income requirements for participation include a stable monthly income such as wages from full-time employment, Social Security or other pension benefits.
