Most countries in South-East Asia have established smallholder dairy farming industries through social welfare and rural development programs to provide a regular cash flow for poorly resourced farmers. These farms are now being treated as accepted rural industries and require a more business-minded approach based on changes to farm profitability. Business Management for Tropical Dairy Farmers gives smallholder dairy farmers the business management skills they will need to remain sustainable. Drawing on detailed financial analyses of smallholders in countries such as Pakistan, Thailand and Malaysia, it shows how to budget cash inputs to match cash outflows during different seasons of the year, and how to invest wisely in improving cattle housing and feeding systems. If farmers make greater use of formats and structures for farm costs and returns, it will increase their awareness of the relative importance of all their financial inputs in terms of cost of production per kilogram of milk produced on the farm. It will also allow them to make more meaningful and timely decisions by correctly costing planned changes to their routine farming practices. The book will also be of use to support organisations to more clearly define the key drivers of profit on smallholder farms, and to government departments and national dairy organisations to routinely evaluate and update their industry policies.

The present study was undertaken to assess the economic performance of small scale dairy farming in two selected urban areas - Gazipur (Industrial area) and Dinajpur (Non-industrial area). A total of 100 small-scale dairy farms were chosen as sample for the study taking 50 dairy farms from the urban areas of each district adopting simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through direct interview with the small dairy farm operator using pre-designed interview schedule. The findings showed that the gross cost (mean) of rearing animals was Tk. 169.91/farm/day in Dinajpur as against Tk. 262.90 in Gazipur, net return/day/animal was Tk.51.53 for dairy farm in Dinajpur and Tk. 79.28 for dairy farm in Gazipur, average milk production/farm /year was 1435 liters in Dinajpur and that was 1775 liters in Gazipur. The Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) was found to be 1.68 for dairy farm in Dinajpur and 1.84 for dairy farm in Gazipur which implies that small-scale dairy industry is a profitable enterprise. The major constraints faced by the dairy owners were identified as paucity of green grass, high price and unavailability of feed and medicine, lack of grazing land, inadequate veterinary services, lack of training and technical know how and lack of institutional credit facilities. Small scale dairy industry could be the main sources of providing nutrition to the urban people and as a means of earning extra- income for the small farm-holders if appropriate measures are taken.

Mountain food security and nutrition are core issues that can contribute positively to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals but paradoxically are often ignored in Zero Hunger and poverty reduction-related agenda. Under the overall leadership of José Graziano da Silva, the Former Director-General of FAO, sustainable mountain agriculture development is set as a priority in Asia and the Pacific, to effectively address this issue and assist Member Countries in tackling food insecurity and malnutrition in mountain regions. This comprehensive publication is the first of its kind that focuses on the multidimensional status, challenges, opportunities and solutions of sustainable mountain agriculture development for Zero Hunger in Asia. This publication is building on the ‘International Workshop and Regional Expert Consultation on Mountain Agriculture Development and Food Security and Nutrition Governance’, held by FAO RAP and UIR in November 2018 Beijing, in collaboration with partners from national governments, national agriculture institutes, universities, international organizations and international research institutes. The publication provides analysis with evidence on how mountain agriculture could contribute to satisfying all four dimensions of food security, to transform food systems to be nutrition-sensitive, climate-resilient, economically-viable and locally adaptable. From this food system perspective, the priority should be given to focus on specialty mountain product identification (e.g. Future Smart Food), production, processing, marketing and consumption, which would effectively expose the potential of mountain agriculture to contribute to Zero Hunger and poverty reduction. In addition, eight Asian country case studies not only identify context-specific challenges within biophysical-technical, policy, socio-economic and institutional dimensions.
