This document is a Call to Action to partners in prevention from various sectors across the nation to address skin cancer as a major public health problem. Many partners are essential to this effort, including federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial governments; members of the business, health care, and education sectors; community, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations; and individuals and families. The goal of this document is to increase awareness of skin cancer and to call for actions to reduce its risk.The first section describes the problem of skin cancer and its major risk factors. It also discusses the relationship between exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and health. The second section describes the current evidence on preventing skin cancer, including current initiatives in the United States and in other countries. The third section describes the gaps in research related to skin cancer prevention, highlighting areas of research where more work is needed. The fourth section identifies specific opportunities to prevent skin cancer by reducing UV exposure in the U.S. population and calls for nationwide action.

Our series Cancer Prevention - Cancer Control continues to address the causes and prevention of cancer. In this volume, Hill, Elwood, and English bring together a rich resource summarizing the state of science underpinning the primary prevention of skin cancer. While skin cancer causes an increasing burden, particularly in populations of European origin, our understanding of the role of sun exposure together with the genetic components of skin cancer continues to grow. Given the emphasis on evidence-based medicine and public health prevention efforts, it is noteworthy that, although we can all access the same evidence base, countries around the world have had remarkably different responses to the application of this knowledge to prevent skin cancer. The outstanding contribution of the Australian public health community to the scientific understanding of skin cancer etiology and the translation of this knowledge into national prevention efforts uniquely positions the editors to compile this volume focused on the primary prevention of skin cancer. In so doing they draw on an international team of authors to present a “state of the science” summary of skin cancer prevention and to identify those areas where uncertainty remains. "Skin cancer is a common, potentially life threatening disease notably on the rise among young adults in the U.S. due to increased sun exposure, intentional sun exposure, and decreased sun protection behaviors. A substantial portion of lifetime exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation occurs during this developmental period. Despite attempts to raise awareness through national skin cancer prevention campaigns, studies suggest that a large proportion of the general population still engage in suboptimal levels of sun protection. The purpose of this project was to explore the use of a video-based educational intervention providing young adults with the knowledge and skills needed to minimize their risk of developing skin cancer. The Health Belief Model and the ACE Star Model of evidence-based practice guided this project. Ninety-four adults 18 years of age and older, visiting a dermatology clinic in Northwest Florida, were recruited. The intervention included a 10-minute educational session utilizing a Power Point presentation focusing on skin cancer preventive behaviors and adequate sunscreen protection. Questionnaires were administered to participants immediately before, and after, the presentation. The major outcome evaluated was an increase of knowledge of skin cancer preventive behaviors and adequate sunscreen protection. The project demonstrated significant (p = 0.001) improvements in adults' knowledge of skin cancer preventive behaviors and adequate sunscreen protection. Implications for advancing nursing practice are to promote improved patient knowledge in order to decrease the incidence of skin cancer in the nation's population. Knowledge derived from this project can be used to ascertain the need of future skin cancer prevention efforts.
