Excerpt from Sir William Turner: A Chapter in Medical History In 1910, my father was approached by an English Publishing House with a view to ascertaining whether he would prepare for publication an account of the progress of medical education during his lifetime. No one was in a better position to do so than he, but, unfortunately, he was unable to see his way to comply with the request. If he had left any instructions relating to the possible preparation of a Biography, I feel certain that he would have suggested that any narrative of his life should take some such form as has been followed in the present volume. An account of the progress of medical and scientific education, as exemplified in the history of the University of Edinburgh during a period of sixty-two years, would have appealed to his sense of the fitness of things, and I am sure, therefore, that in attempting to write along these lines, I have endeavoured to carry out his unspoken wish. The description lacks that personal touch which can only be given to a narrative by one who has been, not only an active participant in the events which are recorded, but frequently the principal mover in them.
