It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the Annual Computers and People Research Conference - ACM SIGMIS-CPR 2018. For more than 50 years, ACM SIGMIS CPR has engaged the academic and practitioner communities in understanding the issues related to the interaction of people with computers, what we now broadly refer to as information technology (IT). The theme of this year's conference is Transforming Healthcare through IT'. From transformation of healthcare delivery through the application of new tools to support information sharing and decision making, to transformation of the clinician-patient relationship through vastly increased information for patients through social media and other sources, to applications of data analytics to identify new treatments and new approaches to population health - virtually no area of healthcare is left unchanged by IT. This interdisciplinary topic spans multiple levels of analysis (individual, team, organi-zation, and societal), and draws on a variety of perspectives (healthcare, information systems, opera-tions management, organizational behavior, computer science, economics, sociology, psychology, etc.). Our theme-related papers are similarly diverse in their foci and perspectives, but they share a desire to understand how applications of IT support the transformation of our health and our healthcare organizations. Our other papers address the traditional SIGMIS theme of computers and people. They showcase topics of current theoretical and practical relevance - such as implications of emerging technologies such as social media and gamification for the IT workforce, effects of IT on the workforce such as tech-nostress, workforce development, and IT workforce practices such as agile and crowdsourcing. Of special note this year are two keynote addresses, one by Daniel Porreca, the executive director of HEALTHeLINK the clinical information exchange and HEALTHeNET the administrative data ex-change for Western New York (WNY), on the topic Connecting at the Intersection of Technology and Healthcare, and the other by Viswanath Venkatesh, Distinguished Professor and Billingsley Chair in Information Systems at the Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas and one of the most influential and highly-cited scholar in the IS discipline, on the topic Doing Research That Matters: Reflecting on the Past and Charting a Future for ICT4D. Also of special note this year is an industry-academia panel that will address issues related to the conference theme and that is comprised of two senior industry executives who have shaped and continue to shape the transformation in the healthcare industry, and two professors who are engaged in understanding the digital transformation occurring around us in general, and that occurring in the healthcare arena, and its implications on work in healthcare services and on our individual lives. Last but not the least, the doctoral consortium at the conference provides an opportunity to doctoral students, who are the budding scholars of our discipline, to refine their scholarly ideas through their interactions with faculty mentors, many of whom are and were journal editors, and with fellow students, in addition to growing their professional networks.
Understanding Personalization: New Aspects of Design and Consumption addresses the global phenomenon of personalization that affects many aspects of everyday life. The book identifies the dimensions of personalization and its typologies. Issues of privacy, the ethics of design, and the designer/maker's control versus the consumer's freedom are covered, along with sections on digital personalization, advances in new media technologies and software development, the way we communicate, our personal devices, and the way personal data is stored and used. Other sections cover the principles of personalization and changing patterns of consumption and development in marketing that facilitate individualized products and services. The book also assesses the convergence of both producers and consumers towards the co-creation of goods and services and the challenges surrounding personalization, customization, and bespoke marketing in the context of ownership and consumption. - Offers multiple perspectives on personalization, a pervasive and complex issue - Presents expertise and practical examples to help users understand personalization and its application to a variety of disciplines - Breaks new ground in defining and explaining personalization in the context of individualized and micro-marketing
Cognitive computing simulates human thought processes with self-learning algorithms that utilize data mining, pattern recognition, and natural language processing. The integration of deep learning improves the performance of Cognitive computing systems in many applications, helping in utilizing heterogeneous data sets and generating meaningful insights.

Understanding and realizing the security and privacy challenges for information systems is a very critical and demanding task for both software engineers and developers to design and implement reliable and trustworthy information systems. This book provides novel contributions and research efforts related to security and privacy by shedding light on the legal, ethical, and technical aspects of security and privacy. This book consists of 12 chapters divided in three groups. The first contains works that discuss the ethical and legal aspects of security and privacy, the second contains works that focus more on the technical aspects of security and privacy, and the third contains works that show the applicability of various solutions in the aforementioned fields. This book is perfect for both experienced readers and young researchers that wish to read about the various aspects of security and privacy.
Social media such as microblogging services and social networking sites are changing the way people interact online and search for information and opinions. This book investigates linguistic patterns in electronic discourse, looking at online evaluative language, Internet slang, memes and ambient affiliation using a large Twitter corpus (over 100 million tweets) alongside specialized case studies. The author argues that we are currently witnessing a cultural movement from online conversation to what can be termed 'searchable talk' - online talk where people affiliate by making their discourse findable (for example, via metadata such as Twitter hashtags) by others holding similar interests. This cutting edge text will be of interest to all scholars and students dealing with electronically mediated discourse.
What is Online Research? is a straightforward, accessible introduction to social research online. The book covers the key issues and concerns, with sections on design, ethics and good practice. It will be key reading for social scientists of all levels.
