Excerpt from Fiftieth Annual Report of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the Commonwealth: Returns of Libels for Divorce, and Returns of Deaths Investigated by the Medical Examiners, for the Year 1891 The following observations upon the Births, Marriages and Deaths registered in Massachusetts in the year 1891 are in tended to render the understanding of the statistics compiled in the office of the Secretary of State somewhat easier of com prehension by the average reader, and afford him a ready comparison between the statistics of this and preceding years without the trouble and inconvenience of searching for himself; in fact, to comply with the provisions of section 15, chapter 32 of the Public Statutes, which requires the Secretary of State to prepare from the returns such tabular results as will render them of practical utility. This is in accordance with the custom of previous reports. It is not intended, however, in this report to present all the elaborate tables heretofore presented, where data are arrived at by an unending series of sums in long division and by per mutations and combinations of figures, which data are, if to any one, of value only to the statistician who might well him self devote the time and labor necessary to ascertaining the facts desired.
