Time spent with your children is precious. Just being at home regularly and talking about whatever, is suffi cient for the emotional development and comfort of every member of the family. Just talk. Th is family saga is about an ordinary familys cohesiveness, strength, ambition and determination that made it possible for within one generation to climb the slippery, ramshackle ladder from deprivation to the security of American middle-class. The story accentuates what has been said by many others, that poverty is more a matter of perception and relativity; that with understanding ones situation thoroughly, one might fi nd a way from victim to mastery through right thinking, right actions and reciprocity. Th e author is not seeking to assert that everyone can bootstrap a way out of poverty. Th ere are places and situations so bereft of opportunities, where poverty is so abject, it will be a travesty to even suggest that behaviors on their part could lift them out. With Several years of experience as a Commissioned police offi cer and a second career as a Child Protective Investigations Program Administrator, the author, having visited the homes of thousands of families, interviewing many, many more individuals, has come to believe what for some is already known at an intellectual level, that there are no perfect families. Th rough education and specifi c training, Mr. King has been able to identify the kind of value system, foreign and local that contribute to inter-generational abuse and neglect of children. He hypothesizes, based on impressionistic information available to him, that Plantocracy, its highest values being Control, Obedience, Punishment and Docility, is probably the dominant source of faulty thinking, that may lead to abusive behaviors and consequences, physical and psychological, for families multiple generations removed. But the work is neither pedantic nor judgmental in addressing external, detrimental factors that bind one to calamitous outcomes. Alcohol abuse and dependency, extravagancy, gender imbalance are all portrayed experientially. Th roughout the book there are repeated examples of the importance of fi lial duties, retention of virtues and some travails brought upon oneself when his control is casually surrendered to another. Exploitation is seen for what it is and discussed without rancor. Th ere is much to enjoy as the readers imagination goes for a ride with folklore, myths and adventure expressed as humorously as ever.
Emotional abuse, like a highly contagious disease, begins in childhood, spreads among family members and friends, and escalates to work and love relationships. Smullens exposes the dysfunctional cycle which inflicts profound wounds and shows how to reconcile the past, start to heal and live an abuse-free life.

US families have been pushed to the wall. At the bottom of the economic ladder, poor and working-class adults aren't forming stable relationships and can't give their kids the start they need because of low wages and uncertain job prospects. Toward the top, professional parents' lives have become a grinding slog of long hours of paid work. Meanwhile their kids are overstressed by pressure to succeed and get into good colleges. In this provocative book, Maxine Eichner argues that these very different struggles might seem unconnected, but they share the same root cause: the increasingly large toll that economic inequality and insecurity are taking on families. It's government rather than families that's to blame, Eichner persuasively contends. Since the 1970s, politicians have sold families out to the wrongheaded notion that the free market alone best supports them. In five decades of "free-market family policy," they've scrapped government programs and gutted market regulations that had helped families thrive. The consequence is the steady drumbeat of bad news we hear about our country today: the opioid epidemic, skyrocketing suicide and mental illness rates, "deaths of despair," and mediocre student achievement scores. Meanwhile, politicians just keep telling families to work a little harder. The Free-Market Family documents US families' impossible plight, showing how much worse they fare than families in other countries. It then demonstrates how politicians' free-market illusions steered our nation wildly off course. Finally, it shows how, using commonsense measures, we can restructure the economy to work for families, rather than the reverse. Doing so would invest in our children's futures, increase our wellbeing, reknit our social fabric, and allow our country to reclaim the American Dream.
Rose stood up and closed her eyes, and as in a dream, a vision appeared before her. She saw herself prostrated at the foot of the cross where Jesus hanged. Her arms desperately encircled the base of the cross. Jesus looked at her, not with condemnation, not even with pain as He hang on the cross, but with love and understanding and clarity. His eyes bored into her soul. When she opened her eyes, she was surrounded by a spiritual blue light that encircled her like a cloud. The cloud pulsated with life, love, and purity. She was washed, cleansed from all her sins, in that one glorious instance when the Lord surrounded her with His Light. Immediately afterward, three transparent brown bald-headed demons with fierce, angry red eyes and gnashing teeth appeared before her. Trembling with fear, she fell to her knees, closed her eyes, and prayed.
