All knowledge was readily received by him; but from the first dawn of reason, religious instruction was peculiarly acceptable to him. After attending the grammar school at Seven Oaks as a day scholar, he was placed at Hyde Abbey School in Winchester, and was afterwards removed to the College there, but not on the foundation. Here he had for his Master the Rev. Doctor William Stanley Goddard, whose kind and judicious treatment contributed in no small degree to the formation of his future character.
