Natchitoches Parish comprises an area of 1,293 square miles just southeast of the Sabine uplift area of northwestern Louisiana. The rocks exposed in the parish are unconsolidated deposits of clay, silt, sand, and gravel that range in age from Paleocene to Recent. Formations of Tertiary age crop out in northeast-to north-trending bands and dip gently to the southeast and east. Quaternary sediments consist of alluvial valley and terrace deposits.
