This volume is a collection of some of the most significant mathematical works of Prof Richard E Bellman. Ten areas of Prof Bellman's mathematical research were selected by his co-workers for this volume. Each chapter starts with an introductory comment on the significance of Bellman's contribution. Some important mathematical theories are put forward and their applications in physics and biology such as the mathematical aspect of chemotherapy and the analysis of biological systems are included in this book.
Analytical Planning: The Organization of Systems deals with systems and planning and suggests a methodological tool for integrating the two. This book presents the basic ideas behind complexity, systems, hierarchies, and prioritization and describes planning as a unique form of decision making with illustrations of some prominent philosophical and methodological approaches. It highlights some shortcomings of traditional approaches to planning and shows how these can be addressed by the systems approach. This monograph consists of seven chapters and opens with a discussion on the nature of complexity and describes an approach that facilitates the use of creativity and experience to structure complex problems. The next chapter explains the rationale for systems thinking and how reductionism works. The Analytic Hierarchy Process is then considered, along with its relationship to some of the properties of systems. The remaining chapters focus on ways of thinking about planning and philosophies of planning; strategic planning; and the applicability of the Analytic Hierarchy Process to benefit-cost analysis and resource allocation. This book is intended for managers, decision makers, and planners, as well as researchers and practitioners in applied mathematics and computer science.

This edited volume contains ten papers on the subject of fuzzy technology. Fuzzy technology emerged as a combination of fuzzy sets theory, fuzzy logic and fuzzy-based reasoning. As a technology it gained a very practical meaning through thousands of applications in different theoretical as well as practical disciplines, covering mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, life science, social science, economy, computer science, and (foremost) electrical, electronic, mechanical, nuclear, chemical, textile, aeronautic, ocean, and many other engineering disciplines. The goal of this book is to create an interest in fuzzy technology among researchers, engineers, professionals and students involved in the research and development in the broad area of artificial intelligence. This book is also intended to bring the reader up-to-date in the area of implementations and applications of fuzzy technology, as well as to generate and stimulate new research ideas in this area. It may inspire and motivate the researcher in new directions, as well as creating a force for new efforts to make a fuzzy technology commonly known and used in science and engineering. This volume appears at a time of unprecedented research interest in the field of fuzzy technology. I intentionally wrote research due to the events that have occurred during the last couple of years. To be more specific, I should describe this interest geographically.
The Second World Conference on Mathematics at the Service of Man was held at the Universidad Politecnica de Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain, June 28 to July 3, 1982. The first volume of the Proceedings of the Conference, entitled "Functional Equations-Theory and Applications" has appeared in the Reidel series "Mathematics and Its Applications". The papers in this volume consist of the invited lectures delivered at the Conference, Section 7: Non-Classical Logics and Modelling, as well as some selected papers which offer an introduction to the philosophy, methodology and to the lite rature of the broad and fascinating field of vagueness, imprecision and uncertainty. The contributed papers appeared in the volume of photo-offset preprints distributed at the Conference. It is our hope that the papers present a good sample with respect to the background, the formalism and practice of this area of research as far as we understand it today. As the subject "Vagueness" touches many aspects of human thinking, the contributions have been made from a broad spectrum ranging from philo~ophy through pure mathematics to probability theory and mathematical economics, therefore the careful reader should find some new insights here. In conclusion, the editors want to thank all authors who have contributed to this volume; the publishers of "Commenta tiones Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae" for permission to reprint the paper "Fuzziness and Fuzzy Equality", Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae 23 (1982), 249-267, and D. The book is about the development of the theory of epistemic fields with the corresponding relational and information fields as a framework for the understanding of strategies and tactics of the theory of knowing as the production of intellectual investment flows and the theory of knowledge accumulation as the production of intellectual capital stocks in systems of factories and departments providing the foundations for the development of open algorithms in the open space of problem-solution dualities. The concepts and the roles of thinking and reasoning with curiosity, creativity, hope, Ill-posed problems, phantom problems, unsolved problems, misinformation, disinformation, fake news, and courage are introduced, defined, and analyzed on the cognitive journeys over the space of ignorance-knowledge dualities, where dualistic-polar conflicts between duals in the space of ignorance-knowledge dualities are resolved with the instruments of fuzzy optimization, the results of which are used to induced the zones of ignorance, the zones of knowledge, and the zones of contentions. A complete development of the set of connecting paths of spaces and sub-spaces is provided, where all varieties, categories, and spaces reside in dualistic-polar structures with knowledge stock viewed as a single tree with the same roots, one trunk, many branches, and a fruit cocktail. The ontological space contains the space of actual-potential dualities as the primary category of knowing, and the epistemological space contains the space of imagination-reality dualities as the derived category of knowing within the space of primary-derived dualities. The space of potentials contains the space of imaginations which contains the sub-spaces of possibility-impossibility, probability-improbability, and possibility-probability dualities with corresponding spaces of necessity-freedom and anticipation-expectation dualities leading to the conception of the possible-world-impossible-world dualities in the space of semantic-non-semantic dualities. This book is also a continuation of the sequence of my works on the theories of paradigms of thought, rationality, info-statics, info-dynamics, entropy, problem-solution dualities in self-contained mathematics and philosophy, and their relational connectivity to information, language, knowing, knowledge, cognitive practices and open maching learning relative to nominalism, and the space of construction-reduction dualities over the spaces of fundamental-applied, production-consumption, input-output, and cost-benefit dualities.
