Excerpt from Sea Songs and Ballads How far is a collection of Sea Songs a monument to the memory of poets and musicians who have endeavoured to represent the taste and spirit of sea-faring folk, or a record of compositions commonly sung by sailors to audiences of their brethren? This question is nearly sure to meet every one whose experience goes back to the time when seamen tried to relieve the monotony of a long voyage and entertain their shipmates by singing - to tunes never made the subject of musical notation - songs never reduced to writing. Most of these have disappeared beyond hope of recovery. A few have been preserved, but have been so altered in the process of preservation that they only faintly resemble the originals. The Introduction to this little volume is surely a proper place in which to remind or for the first time inform landsmen that, till a date within living memory, British sailors had a set of folk-songs of their own; composed and sung by their own minstrels; and almost, perhaps quite, unknown to their fellow countrymen on shore. Excerpt from Songs of the Sea and Lays of the Land Among the songs in this collection are the Brand New Ballads already known more or less to the public, several of them having an American newspaper circulation, while a few are given at times in public readings; since I have learned, for example, that "In Nevada" was one of the stock-pieces of Mr. Clifford Harrison. They now reappear amended and with additions. In the "Songs of the Sea" the reader will not fail to observe that three or four, such as the "Mermaid" and "Time for Us to Go," are not by me at all. They are sailors' songs of the olden time, introduced as suggestions for other lyrics, as I have indeed declared in the text, and also to aid in the main purpose or idea which inspires the whole collection - they being in this respect like stones from more ancient edifices built into new houses, as was the wont of men in the middle age. Excerpt from Sea Songs Dear Mr. Locker, I have several reasons for dedicating this volume of Sea Songs to you. You and the ocean have memories in common. Both mind well that fine old English Admiral, your Grandfather, the warmly-loved friend of Hawke, and the Captain who trained both Nelson and Collingwood for the days of St. Vincent and Trafalgar. Your father, my father's friend, was the ruling power at Greenwich Hospital. He founded the Naval Gallery which peoples the Painted Hall with the men whose deeds have made England the ruler of all seas.
