Excerpt from Scotland in Early Christian Times: The Rhind Lectures in Archaeology-1879 Archeology, or the science of things that are old, embraces the systematic knowledge of the forms, dimensions, composi tion, associations, and geographical distribution of the objects which it studies. This knowledge, which is precise in its nature, and is derived from examination and comparison of the objects themselves, forms the groundwork of the science. It is purely the product of observation, and there neither is, nor can be, anything of a speculative or hypothetical nature included in it. Upon this groundwork of exact knowledge there may be raised a superstructure of conclusions as to the relations of these objects to ancient conditions and customs of human life, which they more or less clearly disclose and in this, its widest scope, archaeology aims at producing a history of man by his works, of art by its monuments, of culture by its manifestations, and of civilisation by its developments. Excerpt from Scotland in Early Christian Times (Second Series): The Rhind Lectures in Archaeology for 1880 In the previous volume, comprising the Rhind Lectures for 1879, I have described the structural remains and relics of the Early Christian Time in Scotland which are exclusively ecclesiastical in their origin and use. In this volume, comprising the Lectures delivered in 1880, the subject is continued and brought to a conclusion by the description of objects which, though not strictly ecclesiastical in origin or use, are yet closely connected with those that are so, either by the character of their art or by their associations. The second series of Lectures is therefore the necessary complement and continuation of the first, completing the description and classification of the various types of existing relics which give testimony to the nature and quality of the art and culture developed and brought to maturity in connection with the civilisation of Early Christian Times in Scotland.
