Excerpt from Bulletin of the Scientific Laboratories of Denison University, 1905-1907, Vol. 13 He started the firs-t volume of the Bulletin of the Scientific Laboratories the year following his coming to Denison. Whether looked at from the point of View of the probability of getting suitable financial support, of the small number and imperfect training of the students and other local workers who might be expected to furnish articles for it, or whether considered with reference to the likelihood of its receiving recognition abroad in the shape of exchanges with the really worthy scientific periodi cals of this and foreign countries - viewed from any of these standpoints the enterprise seemed to many a hazardous one. But how has it turned out? The trustees of the University voted a sum of money to help publish the first volume and have continued to do the same year after year for now nearly twenty years. Sometimes when they did not see how they could do so, with the many pressing financial needs, some of their number have put their hands into their own pockets and extracted therefrom what was necessary to prevent any interruption or delay in the appearance of a publication, which they have come to recognize as of great value to the University. With regard to the ques tion of finding contributors, examination of its index shows that twelve volumes have been issued, aggregating nearly pages of valuable scientific material. In the first ten volumes (complete indices of the last two are not just now at my disposal), I find that there are 85 articles written by many different authors, most of them Denison men, students or faculty members, and not a few of them those who have become original workers mainly through the influence and example of Professor Herrick him self. Excerpt from Bulletin of the Scientific Laboratories of Denison University, 1898-1902, Vol. 11 This island is composed of Corniferous rocks. The best exposures are in two quarries, one on the north side of the island and the other on the southwest. The maximum thickness of the exposed section is about 36 feet. Near the surface the rock is shaly, but it becomes thicker below, and near the bot tom of the quarry a bed 10 feet thick is found. This stone is softer than that to the south. It is lighter in color, also, and freer from siliceous impurities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Bulletin of the Scientific Laboratories of Denison University, Vol. 15 In these days when philosophy is considered less and less as transcendental metaphysics and more and more in terms of the instrumental methodology of the sciences, the thoughts and writings of men who represent this phase of human endeavor are coming to be valued above every other source of philosoph ical inspiration, The opinions of such men as Tyndall, Hux ley, Helmholtz, Kelvin, Mach, Ostwald, to mention no others, become Of great significance to philosophy when the latter is conceived as an interpretation and criticism of the underlying principles and methods of the sciences.
