Duncan Howarth has been modeling military vehicles for years. But he started to find the range of models offered by the kit manufacturers restricting - there were so many unusual and interesting prototypes that he wanted to model, but couldn't. So he began to use ordinary kits as the bases of increasingly adventurous conversions. With the help of drawings and photographs, parts are made to create new variants of existing models and, sometimes, almost completely new models, using just a few components from a donor kit. This book guides the reader through a series of increasingly complex conversions based on readily available kits of World War Two types, and culminates in a magnificent model of the Vomag self-propelled gun built entirely from scratch. Each build is accompanied by drawings, prototype photographs and photocopyable templates which will allow you to build the conversion yourself. The book also gives you the know-how to undertake new and different conversions of your own.
Converting models figures is a fascinating pastime, which can become rather costly if you choose models in metal, or resin. For those of us on a budget, yet still wanting to achieve a more than acceptable result, polythene figures [more usually the province of wargamers] set an interesting challenge. Today, we are blessed indeed that a great diversity of model soldiers, sailors and airmen in all scales, from all of the major combatant nations throughout history, are available from some very notable manufacturers across the world. The book includes detailed step-by-step guides to: Modifying figures - Changing arm and leg positions - Altering uniforms - Adding extra detail - Changing faces - Choosing the right tools for the job - Detailing your figures - Historical accuracy
This double DVD explains the essential techniques needed to build a model military vehicle: how to achieve accurate detail in their construction, along with realistic painting and weathering affects. Emphasizing the importance of research into the real vehicles, Duncan Howarth builds four models, in 1/35th and 1/48th scales. He starts with straightforward plastic kit build, before embarking on an ideal starter conversion. He then completes an intermediate conversion and the simplified build of a resin kit. In the second disc, he explains painting and finishing techniques by completing the M4A1 Sherman. DVD One: 12.8 Selbstfahrlafette 'Sturer Emil' Self-propelled Gun, SdKfz 251/18 half track, Humber Armoured Car Mark 2 DVD Two: Painting and finishing, Painting the M4A1 Sherman

A guide blending the history behind a U.S. battle tank used in the late twentieth century with resources for military vehicle modeling enthusiasts. The M60 was a second-generation American main battle tank, the last in the line of Patton tanks that had first been developed at the end of World War II. It entered operational service with the United States Army in 1960 and some 15,000 M60s were manufactured by Chrysler at the Detroit Tank Arsenal Plant between then and when production ceased in 1983. It served with both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps and was the principal tank deployed in Europe in the sixties, seventies and early eighties, providing NATO’s main armored force at the height of the Cold War. It became one of the most widely used armored fighting vehicles of the twentieth century, serving in the armies of over twenty-five countries. It continued to serve alongside the M1 Abrams into the 1990s before this venerable Cold War warrior was finally retired from active service with the U.S. military in 1997. This volume charts the development of the M60 from its origins in World War II to the Cold War. It focuses on its service with the U.S. military and other NATO armies, examining its combat service in the First Gulf War and also with other armies in the Middle East. The book gives a full account of the wide range of kits and accessories available in all the popular scales and a modeling gallery features builds covering a range of M60s in service with various armed forces. Detailed color profiles provide both reference and inspiration for modelers and military enthusiasts alike. “Another marvelous Craft series profile – this time on the M-60. For all you gamers getting into ‘WWIII,’ here’s the tank that was a US mainstay during the Cold War.” —Historical Miniatures Gaming Society
