The Saskatchewan Forest Fire Control Centre (SFFCC) provided surface meteorological data to BOREAS from its archive. This data set contains hourly surface meteorological data from 18 of the Meteorological stations located across Saskatchewan. Included in these data are parameters of date, time, temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and precipitation. Temporally, the data cover the period of May through September of 1994 and 1995. The data are provided in comma-delimited ASCII files, and are classified as AFM-Staff data. The data files are available on a CD-ROM (see document number 20010000884), or from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC). Hall, Forrest G. This study analyzes the number of forest fires in Saskatchewan, the area burned, the fire cycle, the fire season, causes of fires, potential fire intensity, and the fire climate for two types of ecological units: ecozones & ecoregions. Analyses are performed for all forested ecozones: the boreal plain, the boreal shield, & the taiga shield. For ecoregions, only those of the boreal plain were considered. The analysis is based on 20 years (1981-2000) of fire occurrence (ignition) data, a database of large (over 200 hectare) fires for 1945-2000, and 12 years (1990-2001) of daily fire weather observations. The results reveal contrasts in the fire regime of ecozones & ecoregions and illustrate important variations in the fire regime in both time & space.

The Canadian Forest Fire Behaviour Prediction (FBP) System provides a systematic method of assessing fire behaviour. The FBP System has 14 primary inputs that can be divided into 5 general categories: fuels, weather, topography, foliar moisture content, and type and duration of prediction. In the FBP System these inputs are used to mathematically develop 4 primary and 11 secondary outputs. Primary outputs are generally based on a fire intensity equation, and secondary outputs are calculated using a simple elliptical fire growth model. This publication provides diagrams, examples, and exercises that explain the FBP System in a user-oriented manner. This guideline delineates the interpretation of the FBP System's inputs and outputs and details how the predictions are derived.
