Excerpt from Samuel Davis, of Oxford, Mass;, And Joseph Davis, of Dudley, Mass: And Their Descendants The collecting of the materials of this volume began several years since, without a thought of publication, for the personal gratification of the compiler and with a purpose to preserve that which otherwise would have been, probably, irrecoverably lost. As the work progressed the interest increased. A wide correspondence was carried on for some five or six years, during which time the larger part of the genealogical matter of the work was gathered, and the results were put into the hands of the editor to arrange and print. The thought of inserting biographical and personal notes was not entertained until it was found that much material for such sketches, too valuable to be thrown aside, was contained in the letters.
