The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Robert S. Kerr Environmental Research Laboratory (RSKERL), Ada, Okla., provided technical assistance to the EPA, Effluent Guidelines Division (EGD), in screening wastewaters from the petroleum refining industry for the priority pollutants. This paper will describe RSKERL's involvement in the measurement of specific organics: sampling, sample handling, sample preparation, and quality control. Limited comparative data from split sampling are presented. Also discussed are the problems encountered and solved while strictly adhering to the EPA's sampling and analysis procedures of March 1977.
