It is impossible to pen the life of Baba. Its subtleties are beyond human ken. He often exhorts us, ‘Don’t try to analyse Me, experience Me instead; dive deep into My life, and therein you will find pearls of supreme wisdom which you can use in your daily life.’ This was one endeavour which was a regular feature at the Sri Sathya Sai Hostel, Prasanthi Nilayam – writing students’ experiences with Baba and sharing through them the lessons for life that they have learnt. Through these writings by the students and staff, emerged facets of His personality, which have struck them the most, and transformed their lives forever – His love, grace, grandeur, charisma, message and mission. The ‘Sai Chandana’ magazine started in 1984. Named by Baba Himself, it is an in-house Hostel Magazine offered by the Hostel students and staff to Him, every quarter. It typically consists of the experiences of students and staff (in English, Hindi, Telugu and Sanskrit), in the form of articles and poems, and even colourful sketches of Bhagavan and other deities of the Sanatana Dharma. The best of these articles were selected and published in a book form every five years titled ‘Sai Nandana’. This Book is a compilation of the articles written and published by the students of the Sri Sathya Sai Hostel at Prasanthi Nilayam on the occasion of the 60th Birthday of Baba in November 1985. The Book was a limited copy edition. By and large, the students whose articles were published in the issue would receive a gift copy from the Hostel as a prize for their writing skills. The devotees, who would throng to Prasanthi Nilayam on the occasion, would be lucky enough to get a copy for themselves from the Mandir book shop, for students’ experiences with Swami are something that everyone wants to read. Luckily, a copy was given to the libraries of each of the Hostels and even to the Central Library of the Institute at the Prasanthi Nilayam Campus. Those students who joined the Institute in recent years, were unaware of these early issues. Recently, they happened to come across some of these old copies in the Central Library at the Prasanthi Nilayam Campus of the Institute. When they opened the issues, they found articles by many illustrious alumni, who are today in prominent positions in eminent organisations across the globe. When they were students, they had shared their experiences with Baba in the Sai Nandana issues. And in all the articles was found the same Love Story between Baba and His students continuing year after year, batch after batch, decade after decade – the silent story of inner transformation of students through His Darshan, Sparshan, Sambhashan, Anugraham and Aashirwadam. Sai Publications thought that it was the right time to bring forth all these issues into the public domain, and once again, make it available for all the alumni, students and staff of Sri Sathya Sai Educational Institutions, and to the large Sai family of devotees across the continents, to read and reminisce the golden days which the students spent with Swami during their stay in this hallowed Institution. Since e-books are the most preferred format in contemporary times, the Book has been made available in various e-formats, which are compatible with different software. This would give the readers an opportunity to read an experience a day, while they are travelling to office or returning therefrom, waiting for a meal or winding up after a long day’s work, and help them get soaked in the joy of those moments of a bygone and glorious era! The Book has also been made colourful by including photos of Baba and students relevant to the experience shared in each article. Through this endeavour Sai Publications bring before the readers 60 precious articles containing experiences of students and staff over three decades ago – indeed, a treasure house of Divine Grace and proximity between the Baba and His students.
The auspicious day of Vijaya Dasami, in 1953, opened a golden chapter in the history of mankind, for that was the day chosen by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba for His first ever divine discourse in public. The flow of divine discourses, which started on that auspicious day out of His immense compassion for the well-being and harmony of humanity, has continued unabated even after five decades. During this period, Bhagawan has delivered hundreds of discourses in various places, to a variety of audiences. His benevolent acts for the humanity at large are also unparalleled. His noble mother made three requests to Him, namely to provide drinking water, a school, and a hospital for the village of Puttaparthi. Bhagawan has commissioned mammoth drinking water projects, benefitting hundreds of villages, towns, and even the city of Chennai. He has also built schools, colleges, super specialty hospitals, and even an outstanding university, and constructed thousands of houses to cyclone-hit people. This priceless inaugural volume in Sathya Sai Speaks contains thirty three divine discourses, of which five are for the students and authorities, giving invaluable guidance. There are also five discourses addressed to the residents of different villages, advising them on the value of unity and brotherhood.
Started in 1958, Sanathana Sarathi is a monthly magazine devoted to Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love) - the four cardinal principles of Bhagawan Baba's philosophy. It is published from Prasanthi Nilayam (the Abode of Highest Peace) and acts as a mouthpiece of Baba's Ashram as it speaks of the important events that take place in His sacred Abode, besides carrying Divine Messages conveyed through Divine Discourses of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The word meaning of Sanathana Sarathi is the 'Eternal Charioteer'. It signifies the presence of the Lord in every being as the atma guiding their lives like a charioteer. It implies that he who places his life, the body being likened to a chariot, in an attitude of surrender in the hands of the Lord, will be taken care of by the Lord even as a charioteer would take the occupant of his chariot safely to its destination. The magazine is an instrument to disseminate spiritual knowledge for the moral, physical and mental uplift of humanity without any discrimination as the subject matter discussed therein is always of common interest and of universal appeal. The fifteen Vahinis - streams of sacredness - known as the Vahini Series comprising annotation and interpretation of the Upanishads and other scriptures, Itihasas like the Ramayana, the Bhagavatha and the Mahabharata, and authentic explanations on Dhyana, Dharma, Prema, etc., have been serially published in this magazine as and when they emanated from the Divine pen of Bhagawan Baba. This magazine is published in almost all Indian languages, English and Telugu from Prasanthi Nilayam and others from respective regions. Every year Sanathana Sarathi comes out with a special issue in November commemorating the Divine Birthday. The English and Telugu magazines are posted on the 10th and 23rd respectively, of every month, from Prasanthi Nilayam. This magazine has wide, ever increasing circulation in India as well as abroad, as the study of it brings the reader closer to the philosophy of the Avatar in simple understandable language THUS SPAKE SAI... Discoursing during the launch of Sanathana Sarathi... From this day, our Sanathana Sarathi will lead to victory the cohorts of truth - the Vedas, the Sastras and similar scriptures of all faiths, against the forces of the ego such as injustice, falsehood, immorality and cruelty. This is the reason why it has emerged. This Sarathi will fight in order to establish world prosperity. It is bound to sound the paean of triumph when universal Ananda is achieved.
Sai Bhagvatham is a story of man’s engagement with God. The book uses over a thousand personal spiritual experiences and anecdotes that record inner experiences of persons wrestling with their religious circumstances. The experiences, drawn from all religious traditions, are evocative of how the divine engages with man. The experiences with Sri Sathya Sai Baba are juxtaposed with the narratives of spiritual experiences recorded by seekers over the millennia. The experiences with Sai are uncannily similar to the universal experiences of man with God; they mirror man’s journey to the Divine. The spiritual journey with Sai is tangible, poignant, accessible, and more intense than recorded before. Sai is relentless in the pursuit of his purpose, transformation of man, however much man falters, vacillates, resists, struggles, or even tries to escape. Sai demonstrates that in the relationship of man with the Divine, God is actively engaged with man; he is not an impassive bystander. The engagement of man with God is planned and activated by God, it progresses based upon the responses of man, and the engagement stimulates the transformation of man. Man, in his engagement with God, asks the ‘why’ questions, seeking to comprehend and explain God. He is also reflective, attempting to understand himself, and realize who he really is. The diverse and innumerable first person incidents with Sri Sathya Sai Baba create a vivid characterization of the persona of Sai, hence the use of Bhagvatham in the title.
The Summer Showers in Brindavan, 1974 are no showers, but a flood. Bhagawan in His compassion and boundless love covered the whole gamut of truths, esoteric and explicit, contained in the Vedas in His discourses. While unfolding the esoteric content and explaining the technical terms, He dispelled many misconceptions in the minds of students and pundits, particularly about the term ‘Brahman’, which He established by drawing from scriptural texts, as also His own testimony as Eternal and Universal. He explained the term Bharath as embracing the whole world and not confined to the geographic entity now called ‘India’. Bhagawan has made a loving and passionate appeal to all students to take His teachings to heart and practice Dharma all the while. In fact, it can be, without exaggeration, renamed ‘The Sathya Sai Gita’.
Nooshin Mehrabani, the author of this book is a native of Iran. The author takes the readers through a guided tour of her life – her happy moments and travails seem to go hand-in-hand. Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has been her Guru and God, guiding her through every moment of her life. Many miraculous events happen in her life, when she feels the unseen hand of Bhagawan guiding her convincingly and continuously. She finds answers to knotty, gnarled problems by Bhagawan's grace. The compassionate Lord also grants her many interviews, guiding her life through a safe passage, ultimately leading her to settle at Prasanthi Nilayam. This book will serve as a motivating factor for both newcomers and old-timers in Bhagawan's fold, to hold on to His feet through the thick and thin of life and reach the ultimate goal of life, namely liberation.
In a discourse on 22nd April, 1998, in the hills of Kodaikanal, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba made a revelation about an aspect of God. “The photographer asks you to be ready when he snaps your picture and he gives you time to ready yourself. But, the Divine Cameraman will not give you any notice. You should always be ready to meet the situation. If you engage yourself in bhajan and daivachintanam (thinking of God) – keerthanam and smaranam (singing and remembrance) – you will not be caught unawares.” The Divine Cameraman wants us to appreciate and love His uncertainty. The prerequisite for seeking the Lord who is ever compassionate is to be ever ready and that is something that the author realized as he graduated from Swami’s educational wing into His service wing. One has to be alert always, because things can ‘click’ at any time; there can be a ‘flash’ of inspiration during any hour of the day and though situations appear to have been captured in a ‘negative’ way, they can quickly be ‘developed’ into the ‘positive’ to fill one with beautiful memories. It was an honour, a privilege, and a boon from the highest heavens in fact, that Aravind got the chance to be His cameraman for a few years. However, that did not reverse the roles with respect to readiness. Aravind had to be alert at all times and be ready to “meet the situation” as Swami puts it. He confesses that he has not been alert all the while, but whenever he was alert and sincere, an experience with the Divine unfolded. This book is a collection of such moments – moments that arose at the most unexpected times and in the most beautiful ways to assure him that his Beloved Bhagawan always has him in His sight.
Swami says, “When a mother is feeding her child, you can see her inducing the child to eat by means of harsh words, a smile, a joke, a threat, or a story, diverting its attention, showing the child a dog, a flower, or the moon. I have also to adopt the same tactics to make you listen and assimilate the valuable food that is so necessary for your growth. That is the reason why I relate stories, sing, recite poems, etc. in My discourses!” With this inspiration, Bhagawan’s teachings and related moral stories are compiled in the form of this book from His Divine Discourses, for better understanding of His teachings. This book should help us in getting inspired, to put His teachings into practice in our daily lives and grow spiritually better and better, with each day.
In Vedic Sciences, the Sanskrit word Puja means honoring of a force more powerful than yourself for inner gains and the word Ganesh means the Remover of Obstacles or resistance. In this book a simulated version of the Universe is constructed, and a simulated trip is made to request Lord Ganesh to grant a prosperous, happy and satisfactory life by removing all obstacles to your progress.
