"Over the centuries India has been ruled by men and women who as great conquerors and able administrators have shaped the history of this land. This Pancharatna features five such rulers. Chandragupta Maurya defeated his rivals to found the Mauryan dynasty which reached unprecedented power under his grandson, Ashoka, who later saw the futility of war and renounced violence. Samudragupta of the Gupta dynasty, was a military genius. Harsha ascended the throne at age 16. His story has been taken from the Harshacharita and from the accounts of the Chinese traveller, Hiuen Tsang. Krishnadeva Raya of the Vijayanagara dynasty was described by the Portuguese traveller, Domingo Paes, as the 'perfect king'"--Page 4 of cover
Whether of the past or of the present. India s great men are such as would do honour to any country known to history. This book is an attempt to tell the study of some of the greatest men who have made and are making Indian history. The subjects of this book are divided into eight sections, viz. RULERS AND GREAT LEADERS, STATESMEN AND POLITICIANS, REFORMERS AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS, AUTHORS POETS, SCIENTISTS, EDUCATIONISTS, JUDGES, and INDUSTRIAL PIONEERS, according to the varied manifestations of their genius. They have covered the men who made the India of the past with its rich culture, its deep philosophical wisdom and its stiring examples of courage and chivalry and also the men of today who are taking the best from the past and making a foundation on which to build an ever greater India of the future. Though there has been no attempt to make this book in any way a history of India, one cannot study the lives of her GREAT MEN over a period of more than two thousand years with out learning much of her history and progress. Thus it is that the biographies in this book serve to illuminate and in some sort even to recount the history of the land in which they lived. Yet the reading of this book is as interesting as the reading of a novel. The book comprises contributions of the greatest authorities on their respective subjects and is profusely illustrated with authentic photographs.

In each volume, an introductory essay outlines of history of the disciplines under discussion, and describes how changes and innovations in these disciplines have affected our lives. The biographies that follow are organized in an A-Z format: each biography is divided into a "life" section describing the individual's life and influences and a "legacy" section summarizing the impact of that individual's work throughout history. These biographies cover a diverse group of men and women from around the globe and throughout history. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Mao Tse-tung and Genghis Khan are among the 200 well-known historical figures included in this volume. Examples of other lesser-known, yet important, individuals covered in this work are: Gustavas Adolphus, Swedish empire creator; Hatshepsut, queen of ancient Egyptian dynasty; and Jean Jaurès, French socialist leader and pacifist. Each synopsis provides information on each individual's enduring impact on the common understanding of fundamental themes of human existence.
