Nothing explains this book more than the subtitle, "The Reflections of a Sharecropper's Daughter - Family, Poverty, Potential, and Progress," that refers to the journey of the daughter of a sharecropper who became the first African-American female Superintendent in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The joys and pains as a family in the south, along with some challenges and successes as a leader, are revealed. Though this book is about the life of Annie P. Wimbish, it is certain that many can scribe their names in these pages and find themselves, or someone they know, here.
Unbored is the book every modern child needs. Brilliantly walking the line between cool and constructive, it's crammed with activities that are not only fun and doable but that also get kids standing on their own two feet. If you're a kid, you can: -- Build a tipi or an igloo -- Learn to knit -- Take stuff apart and fix it -- Find out how to be constructively critical -- Film a stop-action movie or edit your own music -- Do parkour like James Bond -- Make a little house for a mouse from lollipop sticks -- Be independent! Catch a bus solo or cook yourself lunch -- Make a fake exhaust for your bike so it sounds like you're revving up a motorcycle -- Design a board game -- Go camping (or glamping) -- Plan a road trip -- Get proactive and support the causes you care about -- Develop your taste and decorate your own room -- Make a rocket from a coke bottle -- Play farting games There are gross facts and fascinating stories, reports on what stuff is like (home schooling, working in an office...), Q&As with inspiring grown-ups, extracts from classic novels, lists of useful resources and best ever lists like the top clean rap songs, stop-motion movies or books about rebellion. Just as kids begin to disappear into their screens, here is a book that encourages them to use those tech skills to be creative, try new things and change the world. And it gets parents to join in. Unbored is fully illustrated, easy to use and appealing to young and old, girl and boy. Parents will be comforted by its anti-perfectionist spirit and humour. Kids will just think it's brilliant.
What do you call a cult leader who makes you hurt the one who loves you and love the one who hurts you? An Irish mother. And what do you call the devoted children of an Irish mother?Disowned.Ah, but this can't be my mother. My mother is so sweet, so cute, so TINY. Why, she's more like the Little People of her girlhood stories than some ominous Jim Jones figure...Isn't she? While this family history has all the elements of a sad childhood -- alcoholism, neglect, divorce -- the mother is so oddball-amusing, you scarcely notice the devastation of her children, even as they help to destroy their father. Unlike Frank McCourt's claim that there is no childhood more miserable than an poor Irish childhood, this is a chronicle of how true misery is more insidious. For it's when an Irish parent puts down the whiskey, and drags her children into her version of the American dream, that they will pine for the good old days when their mother was just a drunk and their daddy a happy deadbeat. BACKWARDS is a story of loyalty. And betrayal. Set in the innocent fifties and turbulent sixties, this childhood memoir traces an Irish war bride's pursuit of success. And when this poor country girl finally lands wealth and prestige, despite the hindrance of her backward children and their lazy father, surely that's a happy ending.Isn't it?
An amazingly humorous book that will seize your heart with its depth, warmth and wisdom.
This is the true tale of a cherubic angel, born of Scottish, Welsh, and Turkish decent. Early that morning in the middle of a blinding snow storm, with the temperature hovering near zero, the bedlam began. An antiquated oblong oak table in Grandma Lloyd's kitchen, was scrubbed and sanitized in preparation of my exalted arrival, plus being the first grandchild and a boy, held great momentous value! For better or worse, his story is a result of growing up on the rough side of a rough world. After many fights, both amateur and professional, I met an old friend who was in the beauty business. Attracted by the lure of money, I changed my name, got a manicure and became an International Hairdressing Champion. This is a recounting of the adventures of both worlds and the activities and ventures in between, some legitimate and some...well...! It is a true and fascinating story, as one New York writer once penned, "From Ring to Ringlets".

I started writing my story about three years ago, I was inspired after reading both of Frank Mcourt s books Angelas Ashes, and tis, I saw a bit of similarity in my younger years to his.And always wanted to get my story out there. My interests are spending time with my grandchildren, Doting on my Maltese terrier Bailey, I am into my photography, Music, painting, and reading about Irish history. I like old classical movies. I love my Giants, Rangers, and Mets. And just enjoy my golden years.
