Excerpt from American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists Proceedings, 1946-1950 American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists, April 18, 1946. The accompanying graph shows the percentage of the Louisiana sugarcane acreage in disease-resistant varie ties for the period 1928 to 1945. From it, it is apparent that since 1930 marked progress has been made in devel oping varieties with greater resistance to mosaic, root rot and stubble deterioration. With respect to mosaic, this has been accomplished largely through the replacement of the susceptible P. O. J. Varieties, and more recently Co. 281, with resistant ones, leaving Co. 290 as the only susceptible variety that is now widely grown. In the western section of the district, where this variety predominates, mosaic generally has been well controlled in it through roughing. Excerpt from Yield Tests of Disease-Resistant Sugar Canes in Louisiana The results of the experiment as a whole, therefore, Show that even in a locality such as this, where fair yields are still obtained from the old varieties, a considerable Increase is promised by the substitution of more vigorous canes. Excerpt from Rate of Deterioration of Sugar Content of Some P. O. J. Sugarcane Varieties in Louisiana The present standard varieties of sugarcane grown in Louisiana are P. O. J. 36, 213, and 234. Ever since the beginning of commercial culture of these varieties in 1925, data have been obtained on the rate of deterioration of the sugar content in standing cane, Windrowed cane, and cane cut for the mill. Other disease-tolerating varieties were included in the experiments as the work progressed. A pre liminary study of the problem was published in 1928. 2 The data there presented show that it IS better to let the cane stand 111 the field until it can be cut for the mill rather than to windrow it. Cane windrowed early after a light frost deteriorated very rapidly. Cane windrowed late, after a hard freeze, kept almost as well as the stand ing cane. During the harvest season of 1928 - 29 the experiments were con tinned, and the results, together With conclusions drawn from all the experiments to date, are here presented.
