In 1974, Rick Telander intended to spend a few days doing a magazine piece on the court wizards of Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant. He ended up staying the entire summer, becoming part of the players' lives and eventually the coach of a loose aggregation known as the Subway Stars. Telander tells of everything he saw: the on-court flash, the off-court jargon, the late-night graffiti raids, the tireless efforts of one promoter-hustler-benefactor to get these kids a chance at a college education. He lets the kids speak for themselves, revealing their grand dreams and ambitions. But he never flinches from showing us how far their dreams are from reality. The roots of today's inner-city basketball can be traced to the world Telander presents in "Heaven is a Playground," the first book of its kind. "Ruffneck Constructivists," published to accompany a group exhibition curated by artist Kara Walker, brings together 11 international artists in order to define a contemporary manifesto of urban architecture and change. Inspired by both the Russian Constructivists and McLyte's 1993 hit song "Ruffneck," the phrase "Ruffneck Constructivists" evokes thuggishness as an expression of abjection. The book features sculpture, photography and video by the artists Dineo Seshee Bopape, Kendell Geers, Arthur Jafa, Jennie C. Jones, Kahlil Joseph, Deana Lawson, Rodney McMillian, Pope.L, Tim Portlock, Lior Shvil and Szymon Tomsia. As Walker states, "Ruffneck Constructivists are defiant shapers of environments. Whatever their gender affiliation, Ruffnecks go hard when all around them they see weakness, softness, compromise, sermonizing, poverty, and lack; they don't change the world through conscious actions, instead they build themselves into the world one assault at a time."

This book, which accompanies a large-scale thematic exhibition, considers the experimental impulse in ideas and forms of the blues - and how it is manifested in a variety of works by contemporary visual artists. This publication accompanies the first comprehensive museum survey of the American artist. Chakaia Booker: The Observance explores the artist's signature form--monumental works made of rubber--while showcasing her artistic innovations across mediums. With new photography of the wide-ranging exhibition at ICA Miami, historic images, and newly commissioned scholarship, the publication illuminates key themes in the artist's practice. With special attention to Booker's totemic and anthropomorphic assemblages fabricated from cast-off tires, the volume highlights Booker's ongoing expression of ecological and technological concerns, examinations of racial and economic disparities, and her interest in the symbolism of the automobile in American culture. Alongside essays by Erin Jenoa Gilbert, Aruna d'Souza, and Stephanie Seidel as well as an interview with the artist by Alex Gartenfeld, this catalog includes some of Booker's most topical works, including Chu Ching (2012), a cross on a wheelbarrow that resembles Jesus being dismounted from the cross. The artist's photographic series, "Foundling Warrior Quest" (2010) and "Graveyard Series" (1995), are featured to explore the importance of performance and mythology in her practice. Anchoring the book is The Observance (1995), an immersive installation made of deconstructed rubber tires and tubes--Booker's first large-scale installation in this signature material, chosen by the artist for its associations with riots.
