The purpose of this design manual is to provide restoration practitioners with guidelines for implementing a subset of low-tech tools--namely beaver dam analogues (BDAs) and post-assisted log structures (PALS)--for initiating process-based restoration in structurally-starved riverscapes. While the concept of process-based restoration in riverscapes has been advocated for at least two decades, details and specific examples on how to implement it remain sparse. Here, we describe 'low-tech process-based restoration' as a practice of using simple, low unit-cost, structural additions (e.g. wood and beaver dams) to riverscapes to mimic functions and initiate specific processes. Hallmarks of this approach include: - An explicit focus on the processes that a low-tech restoration intervention is meant to promote.- A conscious effort to use cost-effective, low-tech treatments (e.g., hand-built, natural materials, non-engineered, short-term design life-spans) because of the need to efficiently scale-up application.- 'Letting the system do the work', which defers critical decision making to riverscapes and nature's ecosystem engineers.

A society that intensifies and expands the use of land and water in urban areas needs to search for solutions to manage the frontiers between these two essential elements for urban living. Sustainable governance of land and water is one of the major challenges of our times. Managing retention areas for floods and droughts, designing resilient urban waterfronts, implementing floating homes, or managing wastewater in shrinking cities are just a few examples where spatial planning steps into the governance arena of water management and vice versa. However, water management and spatial planning pursue different modes of governance, and therefore the frontiers between the two disciplines require developing approaches for setting up governance schemes for sustainable cities of the future. What are the particularities of the governance of land and water? What is the role of regional and local spatial planning? What institutional barriers may arise? This book focuses on questions such as these, and covers groundwater governance, water supply and wastewater treatment, urban riverscapes, urban flooding, flood risk management, and concepts of resilience. The purpose of this book is to present a new proposal for landscape management labor accounts. Many matured countries are now confronting an aging society and a shrinking population. Land degradation in those countries is basically caused by a lack of local labor forces. It is very important, therefore, to consider and develop methods to provide appropriate labor forces for the sustainable management of landscapes or to reduce or shrink landscape management areas sustainably with available labor forces. Landscape management labor accounts provide a foundation for such development.This book consists of four main parts. The first part is concerned with forming concepts, definitions, and overviews. Change in land management policies, research topics, and issues on landscape management are dealt with in the second part. The third part consists of case studies on landscape management labor accounts. Major landscape types chosen for case studies include urban areas, flatland farmlands, Satoyama, and coastal neighborhoods. In the last part of this section, integration methods to develop landscape management labor accounts on different scales are considered. The fourth part of the book is a detailed exposition of contemporary trials to solve issues of land management for the future in the field of urban, rural, forest, river, and coastal planning. Also discussed is the connection of ecosystem service studies and perspectives on the development of landscape management labor accounts with world landscape management research.
