Excerpt from Appendix to the Roman Ritual: Revised and Reissued by the Order of the Fathers of the First Plenary Council of Quebec The parish-priest should prepare for this duty with the greatest care. Through the medium of parochial announ cements the faithful are brought into contact with the exterior life of the Church, and the Pastor keeps ln touch with his parishioners, informing them of the religious events which make up the course of parish life, recalling to them the various Christian obligations, instructing them in the directions and wishes of ecclesiastical author ity, advising, reproaching, and encouraging them with the authority and watchful zeal of a true father in Christ. These announcements are usually listened to with great attention. A zealous Pastor will therefore profit by this opportunity to give, in abrief and practical manner, instructions which are all the more effectual when they are heard with interest and without fatigue. Excerpt from The Ritual Law of the Church, With Its Application to the Communion and Baptismal Offices: To Which Is Added Notes Upon Orders, the Articles, and Canons of 1603 I write at a period when Christianity is menaced with greater perils than she has ever before encountered. It may be that the evening of life has deepened solicitude into alarm, but the new phases of infidelity are more insidious and more dangerous than all that preceded them. Excerpt from The Ceremonial of the English Church The first edition of this work appeared within a few weeks of the publication of the request of the archbishops of Canterbury and York, at Lambeth, on July 31, 1899. The archbishops decided that the use of incense as a part of worship, in service time, should, for the present at least, be discontinued. I then felt it right to counsel conformity to that request; and, for certain weighty reasons, I am of the same mind still. I have, however, been urged to give, in a second edition of this work, some information upon the subject in question; and I have not felt at liberty to refuse to do so. I have, therefore, added two articles to this edition, dealing with the subject. This addition has been made in the hope, that, if men are patient, before long there will come a modification of the archbishops' decision, in the way of direct sanction being given to the fumigatory or deodorant use of incense in service time - a use for which much is to be said. A great deal has been said and written, by men whose learning gives them a claim to be heard, which very seriously diminishes the weight of that decision. Excerpt from The Christian Liturgy, and Book of Common Prayer: Containing the Administration of the Sacraments, and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Apostolic Catholic, or Universal Church of Christ The Liturgy of the Church of America is drawn from various religious writings, and based on the spirit of the Bible. Its forms of Adoration and Petition, and its summary of Christian faith, and Christian doctrine, may be tested by the Holy Scriptures, and they demand the close examina tion of new congregations of faithful men, uniting and forming themselves into a visible Church of Christ. Excerpt from The Catholic Christian Instructed in the Sacraments, Sacrifice, Ceremonies, and Observances of the Church And certainly a person that has been but moderately versed in the sacred writings, will be surprised to find the use of incense ranked by the Doctor amongst heathenish rites, since it is so frequently mentioned with honor in God's holy word; as when the psalm ist desires that his prayer may ascend as incense in the sight of God, Psalm cxli. 2, as when the prophet Malachias (as his words are rendered in the Protes tant Bible) 'foretells, chap. I. 11, that in the Church of Christ, incense shall be offered in every place to God's holy name; as when St. John in the Revela tion, chap. V. 8, and chap. Viii. 4, 8m. Represents to us odors and incense burning before God in the heavenly Jerusalem. For, allowing these texts to be figurative, yet we are not to suppose that the sa cred penmen would describe to us the service either of the militant or triumphant Church, by figures bor rowed from heathenish superstition. As for what the Doctor has alleged against the use of incense out of the acts of the martyrs, who chose rather to die than to offer incense to false gods, and out of the law of Theodosius, which confiscates the places in which the Pagans had offered incense to their dei ties, he could not but know, that all this was utterly foreign to his purpose: but if he had a mind to be informed of the antiquity of the ceremonial use of incense amongst the Christians, he might have found it in the most ancient liturgies, and even in the very canons attributed to the Apostles, can. 3. Excerpt from Thoughts on the Services: Designed as an Introduction to the Liturgy, and an Aid to Its Devout Use IT would be strange, indeed, if fifty years had brought no changes in the customs and usages of the Church tending to make the former editions of this little book somewhat out of date. And when those fifty years have been the most active and progressive in all our history, characterized by wide-spread interest in liturgical and ritual matters, and by a marvellous development of the churchly Spirit, in architecture, music, and life, we might well expect that many changes would be necessary in order to harmonize the past and present. The Prayer book has been revised and new features introduced into our worship. The Lectionary has been considerably altered, rendering most inappropriate some Of our au thor's references. A large and varied Hymnology has succeeded to the metrical Psalms and selected Hymns Of former days. But no rude hand has destroyed or marred the sublime beauty of our Common Prayer, and so deeply had our poet-bishop entered into the spirit of the Church's wor ship that in revising this book few changes have been found needful other than those caused by the circum stances mentioned above.
