Asia is a continent of contradictions and boundaries; it offers exciting business opportunities, but is also characterized by unpredictability and conflict. While flexibility and creativity are in the DNA of many startups in China, major players like Xiaomi and Alibaba have also emerged as global giants, challenging established global competitors. The book presents a comprehensive overview of the practice of CSR in Asia. Normally CSR is seen in the Western angles, but here, in this book, Asian philosophies and thoughts are also examined. Touted as the first of its kind, the book also compares Western and Asian perspectives on CSR and presents them in the light of Asian philosophies and thoughts, such as Confucian, Islamic (Koranic), Indian (Vedantic) and other Asian ways of looking at CSR in their own rights and perspectives.​
For organisations and management the role of business ethics is of key importance, but to what extent business ethics are actually new or fashionable or universally applicable are interesting questions. Asia has been the site of contests between competing economic and ethical views of how economic norms and institutions are organized. This book examines the evolutionary similarities and differences of institutionalizing business ethics in Asia in a historical context and in comparison to better-explored business ethics literature, both empirically and theoretically. This collection uses both historical and contemporary cases in Japan, Korea and China to show that these countries have tried to balance their traditional business ethics norms and values with those that have been introduced from the West. Underpinning the case studies is the fact that these countries have historically pursued ethical mandates in running private corporations, although corruptive practices were also rampant during different historical periods.
This edited collection emerged from the need to know how business schools in Asia are inculcating responsible management. Data for the book was sourced from (a) the workshop proceedings of the 6th PRME Asia Forum held in November 2015 and (b) case studies submitted as part of the Forum. Academics from India, China, Philippines, New Zealand, USA and Hong Kong (who taught in Asia) contributed to the workshop / the case studies. The book describes how some Asian business schools are incorporating ethics, social responsibility and sustainability into their curricular and extra-curricular activities. It identifies the challenges faced in providing such education and the implications thereof. In the process, it captures the unique flavour of Asian business schools. Business schools in Asia appear to have introduced several stand-alone courses on ethics and corporate responsibility. They have adopted pedagogies suited to the profile of their students. Many have promoted a concern for the poor through volunteering, projects or internships with NGOs. However, few have made responsible management a central part of their business school curriculum. Greater integration of responsible management into the curriculum requires supportive administrative policies, greater cross-functional interaction and the development of context-appropriate learning materials.
