Abstract: This book examines the special issues involved in the etiology, treatment, and prevention of alcoholism and other types of substance abuse among specific populations. Contributors have carefully reviewed the existing literature on a specific population in order to include the most current substance abuse information on that population. Chapters include demographic information, substance abuse rates, and kinds of substances abused by a specific population. Populations examined include: women, the dual-diagnoisis patient, the disabled, the elderly, blacks, physicians, adult children of alcoholics, gay and lesbians, hispanics, adolescents, native Americans, indigents, professional athletes, and military personnel. This book is intended to help development programs for specific populations that will be effective in the elimination of substance abuse problems.
