However difficult it may be for every citizen to attain this knowledge, the difficulty forms no excuse; and if, for want of it, any one incur a penalty of a criminal nature, or sud'er a loss of his civil rights, though the judge may compassionate the sufferings, he must pronounce, without power to mitigate.
