Excerpt from Reports of Cases Argued and Adjudged, Vol. 1: In the Supreme Court of the United States, January Term, 1848 In pursuance of the act of Congress approved August 26th, 1842, the court proceed to appoint a Reporter, and order that Benjamin C. Howard be and he is hereby appointed Reporter, in the Supreme Court of the United States. Benjamin C. Howard, Esquire, being appointed Reporter of the decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States under the act of Congress of 26th of August, 1842, took in open court the following oath of office: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties of my said office, according to the best of my abilities and understanding, and that I will support the Constitution of the United States; so help me God: " and thereupon entered upon the discharge of his duties.
