This collection contains correspondence and financial records about the operations and communications of the Hartford, Providence, and Fishkill Railroad Company from 1848 to 1881, with the bulk of the materials in the 1850s. It includes letters from the paymaster, construction supervisors, attorneys, bankers, and top officials of the company. Several of the letters relate to property claims from farmers about fencing operations near their land. The financial records describe the day-to-day operations of the railroad and include land purchases records, engineering field notes, disputes and claims by land owners, claims by passengers for injuries, construction documents, accounting reports, expense sheets, and ticket sales tallies. There are also returned checks from the Providence State Bank, the Home National Bank, and the West Meriden Brittania Company.
