One of the central challenges in examining the relationship between disarmament and development could be summarized in the words of the Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development which stated: "The deep fault line that divides human society between the rich and the poor and the ever-increasing gap between the developed and developing worlds pose a major threat to global prosperity, security and stability." The United Nations is reviewing the relationship between disarmament and development after a lapse of more than twenty years.
