Television is the most powerful system of images in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Nonetheless, TV has attained only little philosophical attention so far, especially compared to other (visual) media such as film. This book looks at TV as what happens on the screen and beyond it; which is mainly the operation of switching images. It therefore proposes a new definition of TV as the first picture that can be switched on, off, and over, which stresses that TV is more tactile than visual. Through the operation of switching, TV figures the world from within and as the course of its figuration. This is grasped here by the term of “ontography”. Through the ongoing interlacing and bridging of “TV 1.0” (the image is being switched) and “TV 2.0” (the image is a switch), TV exponentially increases the production and circulation of images. It transforms the world and itself from an analogue state to a digital one and from central perspectivism to pluri-perspective. In terms of time, through switching and the switch, it develops and reworks new temporal orderings, such as instantaneity, synchronicity, flow, and seriality. TV makes its own history. In space, it creates a mediasphere as its habitat and hence new forms of being-in-the-world, of proximity and distance, and scale. Anthropologically, it works on what a subject and an object is, on what makes the human being, and ontographically, how it is possible that there is something at all instead of nothing: through switch-images.

Migration for work is so significant, whether within the country or outside, that the dilemmas and concerns of the diaspora are always interesting data. Put simply, the book tries to bring forward the living practices of communities which are interlocked in time and space, where work and their cultures become intermeshed in different ways. Of course cyberspace becomes the common denominator in understanding that people are interested in one another, families and friends become interactive over spans of time which allow a certain intimacy of acknowledgement. Economic practices are also embedded in the hinterland of communication. As the world becomes increasingly vulnerable to climate change, organic farming, the search for water, the protection of lands and people from floods, are all real indexes of how urgent the task of recording people's life worlds has become. Narrative production, and its interpretation draws us into the complexities of the ethnographic present, which as a type of documentation provides resource materials to historians. Since the world is now so encompassable, the book explores how human being remember the past, while creating new niches for the survival of their families and communities. Hybridization of cultures also involves familiarity with world literature, because people enjoy the expanse of imagination into which they are released by reading time honoured texts, whether of the ancient past, or of contemporary time. The time of legend, of fable, of coercive patterns of existence arising out of natural or political calamities, makes them ever more respectful of traditions and the hope for survival. Out of war and loss arise both science and poetry, not necessarily opposed to one another. This book tries to bring to the reader the pleasures of many cultures in conversation with one another, where dissonances may be accommodated.
Positioned within current ecocritical scholarship, this volume is the first book-length study of the representations of plants in contemporary American, English, and Australian poetry. Through readings of botanically-minded writers including Les Murray, Louise Glück, and Alice Oswald, it addresses the relationship between language and the subjectivity, agency, sentience, consciousness, and intelligence of vegetal life. Scientific, philosophical, and literary frameworks enable the author to develop an interdisciplinary approach to examining the role of plants in poetry. Drawing from recent plant science and contributing to the exciting new field of critical plant studies, the author develops a methodology he calls "botanical criticism" that aims to redress the lack of emphasis on plant life in studies of poetry. As a subset of ecocriticism, botanical criticism investigates how poets engage with plants literally and figuratively, materially and symbolically, in their works.
