The current ecological crisis is a matter of urgent global concern, with solutions being sought on many fronts. In this book, Seyyed Hossein Nasr argues that the devastation of our world has been exacerbated, if not actually caused, by the reductionist view of nature that has been advanced by modern secular science. Nazism hoped to create a new man, living in accordance with the fixed laws of nature, and was thus essentially anti-Jewish. Ch. 5 (p. 117-136) shows that, for social and cultural reasons, Jews were not considered part of the natural world but were described as parasites, making a war to exterminate them logically and ethically inevitable. The widespread "abstract" dislike of Jews reported by historians was part of a "bourgeois group fantasy" in which the Jew was cast as the "Other". This view was accepted by the Churches, which alone might have protested successfully against antisemitic measures.
