This important book explores the interaction of global environmental discourses and local traditions and practices in twelve countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Based upon two parallel groups of studies, reviewing cultural influences in individual countries, and the attitudes of young people across the region, it has important implications for environmental policy and education.
The aim of the Handbook is to present readily accessible, but scholarly sources of information about educational research in the Asia-Pacific region. The scale and scope of the Handbook is such that the articles included in it provide substantive contributions to knowledge and understanding of education in the Asia region. In so doing, the articles present the problems and issues facing education in the region and the findings of research conducted within the region that contribute to the resolution of these problems and issues. Moreover, since new problems and issues are constantly arising, the articles in the Handbook also indicate the likely directions of future developments. The different articles within the Handbook seek to conceptualize the problems in each specific content area under review, provide an integration of the research conducted within that area, the theoretical basis of the research the practical implications of the research and the contribution of the research towards the resolution of the problems identified. Thus, the articles do not involve the reporting of newly conducted research, but rather require a synthesis of the research undertaken in a particular area, with reference to the research methods employed and the theoretical frameworks on which the research is based. In general, the articles do not advocate a single point of view, but rather, present alternative points of view and comment on the debate and disagreements associated with the conduct and findings of the research. Furthermore, it should be noted, that the Handbook is not concerned with research methodology, and only considers the methods employed in inquiry in so far as the particular methods of research contribute to the effective investigation of problems and issues that have arisen in the conduct and provision of education at different levels within the region.

News: The 2012 Elizabeth Haub Prize for Environmental Law is awarded to Emeritus Professor Koh Kheng-Lian in recognition of her important and pioneering contributions to the development and evolution of environmental law in Singapore and in the whole ASEAN region. Her contributions have been particularly significant in the areas of capacity building and scholarship in the field of ASEAN environmental law. ASEAN Environmental Law, Policy and Governance: Selected Documents, in two volumes, contains a judicious compilation of relevant ASEAN environmental instruments. These documents deal with ASEAN's progressive development of environmental law, policy and governance. Volume II covers sectoral areas including natural resources and biodiversity, forestry, agriculture and food, cultural heritage, coastal and marine environment, water resources management, zoonotic diseases and the environment, energy and climate change, environmental disaster management, environmental education, environmental governance and epilogue. ASEAN has grown in stature and has an important role to play in developing global environmental sustainability. They are an adobe to millions of species of animals including human beings, plants and microorganisms. They also give massive ecosystem services to mankind and to all the living beings thriving on this earth. They regulate climate, water cycles and carbon sequestering on this planet. They even provide a livelihood to human beings all over the world. They check global warming on this earth. The parameter of sustainable development is that forest and biodiversity is conserved for the coming generations also. Forests are the most important repositories of terrestrial biological diversity. The diversity of life amongst the living beings and their distinct habitats, the interactions between the various components of the biodiversity makes this planet a habitable place for various life forms. Forest conservation is extremely important for intergenerational equity and the principle of sustainable development paves the way. The forests especially in the domains of forestry and agriculture provide 40% of the world’s economy. This is due to the biological diversity in the forest ecosystems. 70% of the world’s poor populace who live in rural areas is directly dependent on biodiversity for their livelihood. A rough estimate of 60 million indigenous folks are somehow reliant on forests for their daily needs. The Supreme Court of India in Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra v. State of Uttar Pradesh elucidated the importance of ecosystem services as provided by the forests.
This book offers readers a diversity of perspectives, experiences and practical examples from various facets of Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) that can propel practice, further research and inform decision-making in the region, thus making for more cogent and effective ESE. The Caribbean region is comprised of what is said to be the largest number of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), together with the non-island nations of Belize, Guyana, and Suriname. Although diverse with respect to governance, size, topography, and income, the Caribbean region has a common set of geographic and socio-economic characteristics that make it vulnerable to environmental hazards, economic challenges and social instability. Further to these particular vulnerabilities are various phenomena that pose critical sustainability challenges, two of which are climate change and crime and violence. Consequently, responsive and relevant ESE is needed to address these issues through knowledge enhancement, attitudinal change, skills development and behaviour change. As we seek solutions, this text brings together various empirical and theoretical contributions focused primarily on the English-speaking Caribbean region, that explore a number of areas such as ESE pedagogy, teacher education, values education and progress evaluation. This volume will be a key resource for educators, policymakers, scholars and advanced students of ESE, as well as those interested in protecting our planet.
