Politics of Soft Power Diplomacy and its Reponses is the outcome of Seminar Series at Mt Everest College, Senapati (Manipur) for the past more than half dozen decade of continual effort, sustained by loving promotion and encouragement received from reputed ICSSR and UGC in granting Seminar grant to me as convener of this series. The book covers wide ranges of inclusion and exclusion in accessing mainstream projects and government programmes which are dealt and discussed here by different contributors of papers from various academic disciplines. It is felt that Soft Power Diplomacy is very instrumental in shaping the image of a country abroad. Joseph Nye coined the term and domestic policies are as important as foreign polices. Classical Realists too have informed consent on the similar understanding of domestic domain having ramification on foreign policies for a country. The author/editor of this book feels that the work will contribute in its bit to researches and analyses and expected that the gap in formulating the issues pertaining to the marginalized and suppressed groups in policy formulation and implementation can be further carried in future. I always said that soft corner given to minorities and dominated section in any given group/society is pre-requisite to development of the country. If in a given country, only the the majority rules, then that country would never be called a pluralistic and cosmopolitan approach in its shape of designing the structure of its government and governance. Besides, the author/editor also has no doubt that such studies as this will be of special interest to academicians, policy makers, policy implementers, legal practitioners, politicians, activists, students, and public at large. As issues discussed here are all Soft Power Diplomacy domain that pertain to flexible and diversified components that are most required to address the grievances of the discriminated and dominated lots in the society.
This volume looks at facets of cultural interactions between India and Thailand---two historically significant countries of the South East Asian region. For the first time a comprehensive discussion on historical and contemporary cultural interactions between Indian and Thailand has been attempted in this volume. The ASEAN-India economic integration has made substantial progress in recent years. India’s engagements with Southeast and East Asia have received new momentum under the Act East Policy (AEP). In 2017, ASEAN and India will be celebrating 25 years of their dialogue relations. The relationship is set to deepen in coming days as ASEAN and India step up their collaboration across a range of economic and strategic issues, including trade and connectivity, culture, people-to-people links, trans-national terrorism, and maritime security. However, both of them have been facing several challenges which call for concerted efforts by ASEAN and India. With ASEAN and India working towards establishing a Comprehensive Free Trade Area through Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement, their cooperation will be key in promoting economic stability, competitiveness, growth and integration in the region. Throughout its history, Thailand has shown remarkable resiliency, adaptability, and creativity in responding to serious threats and crises, and this since much earlier times when it was known as Siam. Modern nation states do not constitute closed entities. This is true especially in Southeast Asia, where Chinese migrants have continued to make their new homes over a long period of time, resulting in many different ethnic groups co-existing in new nation states. Focusing on the consequences of migration, and cultural contact between the various ethnic groups, this book describes and analyses the nature of ethnic identity and state of ethnic relations, both historically and in the present day, in multi-ethnic, pluralistic nation states in Southeast Asia. Drawing on extensive primary fieldwork in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Burma, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, the book examines the mediations, and transformation of ethnic identity and the social incorporation, tensions and conflicts and the construction of new social worlds resulting from cultural contact among different ethnic groups.

Professor Wang Gungwu is the Institute of Policy Studies' 12th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore. This book is an edited collection of his four IPS-Nathan Lectures, delivered from November 2022 to March 2023, and includes highlights of his question-and-answer segments with our audience.The Southeast Asian region is home to a set of diverse local cultures and distinct local identities. In this lecture series, Professor Wang looks at how great civilisations came into contact with our region and shaped its local identities and cultures. Being at the centre of Southeast Asia, Singapore's national identity and development have also been moulded by great ancient civilisations, namely the Indic, Sinic and Islamic. Later on, the idea of modernity brought about by Christian European civilisation greatly impacted our region. Understanding the history of Singapore from this perspective will give us insight to how the country's modern identity is being shaped and enable us to better understand our region's place in the modern world order.The IPS-Nathan Lecture series was launched in 2014 as part of the S R Nathan Fellowship for the Study of Singapore, named after Singapore's sixth and longest-serving president.
