"TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 709: Investigation of Short-Term Laboratory Aging of Neat and Modified Asphalt Binders provides a proposed method of testing for short-term laboratory aging of neat and modified asphalt binders using the modified German rotating flask as an alternative to the rolling thin film oven test. The following appendixes A-E to NCHRP Report 709 are only available in electronic format."--
This is the first ever text-cum-reference book in India on “Bituminous Road Construction”. It includes references to the codes and specifications of the Indian Roads Congress and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), besides the international standards such as ASTM and AASHTO. This book provides a thorough knowledge of bituminous road construction such as bitumen; aggregate; mix design; special mixes such as stone matrix asphalt and warm mix asphalt; structural design of flexible pavements; asphalt production and construction; distresses in asphalt pavements; maintenance and rehabilitation of asphalt pavements including recycling; and interesting investigations of premature failure of asphalt pavements across the world. It includes a large number of photographs for easy comprehension of the subject matter. This book has been designed to serve as a text for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of Civil Engineering for the courses on: Highway Materials including Testing Laboratory; Asphalt Mix Design; Highway Construction and Maintenance; Highway Pavement Failures; and Design of Flexible Pavements. Cutting-edge technology on bituminous road constructions, included in the book, helps M.Tech and Ph.D. students in conducting research in this field. Since over 95% of highways have bituminous surface, this book is also an ideal reference for thousands of practicing highway engineers who are engaged in the most ambitious highway construction programme ever in India. Highlights of the Second Edition: • Incorporates cutting-edge technology on the topics covered • Includes new sections on bitumen chemistry; durability of bitumen; Balanced Mix Design (BMD); asphalt mix characterization; perpetual pavements; QC/QA in India; and rehabilitation of distressed concrete pavements with bituminous overlays; and life cycle costs of bituminous versus concrete pavements. TARGET AUDIENCE • B.Tech Civil Engineering • M.Tech Highway Education • Practicing Highway Engineer

The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. The work will be of interest to practising engineers, designers, consultants and students in mining, underground, tunnelling, transportation and construction engineering, as well as to foundation and geological engineers, urban planners/developers and architects.
