This book series is composed of peer-reviewed proceedings of selected symposia organized by the International Association of Geodesy. It deals primarily with topics related to Geodesy as applied to the Earth Sciences : terrestrial reference frame, Earth gravity field, Geodynamics and Earth rotation, Positioning and engineering applications.
This book on space geodesy presents pioneering geometrical approaches in the modelling of satellite orbits and gravity field of the Earth, based on the gravity field missions CHAMP, GRACE and GOCE in the LEO orbit. Geometrical approach is also extended to precise positioning in space using multi-GNSS constellations and space geodesy techniques in the realization of the terrestrial and celestial reference frame of the Earth. This book addresses major new developments that were taking place in space geodesy in the last decade, namely the availability of GPS receivers onboard LEO satellites, the multitude of the new GNSS satellite navigation systems, the huge improvement in the accuracy of satellite clocks and the revolution in the determination of the Earth's gravity field with dedicated satellite missions.
This volume gathers the proceedings of the IX Hotine-Marussi Symposium on Mathematical Geodesy, which was held from 18 to 22 June 2018 at the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Since 2006, the Hotine-Marussi Symposia series has been produced under the auspices of the Inter-Commission Committee on Theory (ICCT) within the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). The ICCT has organized the last four Hotine-Marussi Symposia, held in Wuhan (2006) and Rome (2009, 2013 and 2018). The overall goal of the ICCT and Hotine-Marussi Symposia has always been to advance geodetic theory, as reflected in the 25 peer-reviewed research articles presented here. The IX Hotine-Marussi Symposium was divided into 10 topical sessions covering all aspects of geodetic theory including reference frames, gravity field modelling, adjustment theory, atmosphere, time series analysis and advanced numerical methods. In total 118 participants attended the Symposium and delivered 82 oral and 37 poster presentations. During a special session at the Accademia Nazionale deiLincei, the oldest scientific academy in the world, six invited speakers discussed interactions of geodesy with oceanography, glaciology, atmospheric research, mathematics, Earth science and seismology.
This volume treats the key aspects that must be known when dealing with continuous space geodetic or terrestrial geodetic observations. The signals of Earth core resonance are discussed, as well as tidal effects on Earth polar motion and on earthquake triggering. Hydrologic loading, be it ocean tides or subsurface water flows, is discussed. These signals compete with crustal deformation observations of earthquakes (e.g., Gorkha 2015) during interseismic periods, and on volcanoes (Elbrus, Caucasus). The instrumentation that is covered includes superconducting gravimeters, continuous seafloor gravimeters, interferometric tilt and strain meters, and GNSS networks. The articles give an up-to-date account of research in which the Earth tides are a benchmark signal for the sophisticated instrumentation mounted on satellites or the surface, observing time-variable signals of an evolving Earth. Scientists studying the earthquake cycle and geodetic monitoring will find useful material. For students in the geosciences, the collection offers a good overview of the broad spectrum of topics related to the Earth geodetic monitoring.
A data-driven explanation of when successful religious parties reduce the civil liberties of their citizens in Muslim-majority countries and when they don't. Religious parties are increasingly common across the world. More and more, they participate in elections, win legislative seats, and join governments, particularly in Muslim-majority countries. Since they are often founded on orthodox principles that are inconsistent with liberal democracy, their rise potentially holds consequences for the prospects of liberal democratic values and practices-and this risk has inspired much heated debate. In Religious Parties and the Politics of Civil Liberties, the award-winning political science scholar Vineeta Yadav considers a question that has been central to the discussion: Will the success of religious parties lead to declines in the civil liberties of their citizens? Yadav summarizes the popular and academic sides of the conversation and addresses the weaknesses of both by presenting an original empirical analysis of religious parties' actual relationship to civil liberties. Many believe that if religious parties come to power, they will curb civil liberties in order to realize their religious visions. Academic research on religious parties, however, claims that the need to compete in elections incentivizes religious parties to moderate their behaviors and policies, including on civil liberties. Neither of these assertions has been systematically tested until now. With this book, Yadav adjudicates the debate using systematic data that covers all Muslim-majority countries for a period of almost forty years. She highlights the role that religious lobbies play in this issue and goes on to identify the specific conditions under which religious parties do or don't curb civil liberties. A sweeping comparative account that combines large-N analysis with focused studies of Turkey and Pakistan, this book will reshape our understanding of the relationship between religious party strength and the preservation of civil liberties.
International Conference of Political Economy (ICOPEC), takes as a goal to identify and analyze the status of its age, held its first conference with the theme "International Political Economy: Adam Smith Today " in 2009. Following the ICOPEC conference, JOPEC Publication started to be published in 2010. JOPEC Publication aims at searching required alternatives, in addition to existing alternatives, with a critical approach, has been the main supporter of ICOPEC conference by including the studies in this context. In 2016, the main theme of the 7th conference was determined as “State, Economic Policy, Taxation and Development". IJOPEC Publication has undertaken to publish the papers, presented at this conference in English and Turkish, as an e-book. Day by day, the economic development phenomenon increases its importance in terms of its content and it is described as a science that deals with the prosperity and development of the societies within the qualitative and quantitative aspects of their structural changes. Economic development, along with being economic, emphasizes and contains structural change in social, political and cultural fields and prosperity increasing as a whole. In this context, it is important to analyze different aspects and scopes of development. For this reason, “Economic Development in the Context of Social and Political Interactions” has come to light as a collective study of many academicians from various universities and it is prepared with interdisciplinary point of view. is work deals with economic development phenomenon sophisticatedly and presents both its theoretical and practical implications for the benefit of higher education and those who interest in the subject.
In the history section, the subject of health was handled with two of the studies focusing on the war period and the other focusing on Antique Greece period. In this context, while war as a political instrument and attitudes of social groups towards its influences were handles, the field of institutional construction was also simultaneously focused by one of the articles. The article, which deals with the Antique Greece period, alongside the place of the god, goddesses, mythological characters and medicus in the social structure of Greece society, their positions in the sphere of health were being handled. Within the section of politics, there are seven different articles investigates such different subjects as political parties, the importance of the gender roles, religion and identity matters relating with the Turkish right, govermentality regarding to genetic knowledge and urbanization, and terror typologies. Consequently, the papers in the book draw attention to different aspects of history and politics. We believe that such studies would contribute to the development of debates in social sciences and encourage interdisciplinary approaches.
The book examines how religious institutional structures affect Islamist and Catholic political parties in the Middle East and Western Europe.
This ambitious, innovative project examines the principle of effective judicial protection in EU law over two volumes. The principle of effective judicial protection is a cornerstone of the EU's judicial system and is re-affirmed in Article 47 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Since the 1980s the Court of Justice has used the principle to shape EU and national procedural rules; more recently, the principle has acquired an even more central role in the EU constitutional structure. In this first volume, an expert team explores how the Court of Justice has interpreted the principle, as expressed in particular by Article 47 of the Charter, in selected policy areas, and reflects on the impact of the principle on the EU's constitutional structure. Addressing key questions such as legal certainty, judicial independence and procedural autonomy, this volume significantly adds to our understanding of judicial protection within the multi-level EU judicial architecture.
