"Conrad Murrihy's mother is dying and she has one final wish: to see her eldest son Francis who has not contacted home in two years. In a race to find him and return home to his mother, Conrad travels far from his native Nova Scotia, Canada and through the heart of rural North Island, New Zealand following leads to Taumarunui, Auckland, Whanganui, Ratana and, finally, on an epic journey up the Whanganui River. Along the way, Conrad discovers his brother has been living multiple lives - as a Catholic brother, a spoken-word poet, a suspected criminal and a new kind of poropiti for iwi Maori. Conrad's search forces him to confront issues in his own life - issues of commitment, family loyalties, reconciliation with the past and openness to future possibilities - brought on by his encounters with the people, places and spirits of New Zealand. In this, his first novel, Antony Millen explores the complex spiritual fabric of New Zealand while still telling a simple story of a man trying to mend his family"--Back cover.
Wherever bodies of water are, people settle, and stories collect. Six generations of poet Airini Beautrais' family have lived near the Whanganui River, the restless, all-encompassing figure at the heart of her fourth collection Flow. Flow is a brilliant polyphony of stories - large, small, geological, ecological, and human - that draw on many forms and voices and move through various stages of human settlement up to the present day. In March 2017, in a world first, the Whanganui River was granted the status of legal personhood. 'This remarkable sequence winds and eddies like the Whanganui River, filtering the region's many histories into something exhilarating and readable. Is verse the future of history?' --James Brown.

"Marie Duffy is one of the best choreographers in the world. She has been my dance master and right-hand person since 1996. She is like my twin sister. I will love her forever." – Michael Flatley Marie Duffy is the undisputed queen of Irish dancing: she has trained more world champions than any other teacher, and has been Michael Flatley's right-hand woman for twenty years. She works tirelessly to promote Irish dance and culture internationally. In this honest and entertaining book, Marie gives us a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of professional Irish dance, and draws back the curtain on her own fascinating and inspiring life. Marie first gained recognition dancing on entertainment shows in the 1960s, and went on to become a hugely successful Irish dancing teacher. Watching the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest in her living room, Marie was filled with pride as she'd taught many of the dancers in the famous Riverdance interval act. Two years later, Marie received a phone call that transformed her life when Michael Flatley offered her a job on a new show he had devised. Lord of the Dance would go on to become a worldwide hit, beginning years of fruitful collaboration between Marie and Flatley. Sadly however, Marie's professional highs have been accompanied by many personal lows, including the loss of her mother (who didn't live to see her daughter's success) and first husband Ian, and being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. Marie had a mastectomy, but in the showbiz tradition of 'the show must go on' she went back to her work rehearsing the dance troupe.
Two brothers. One mission: Restore privacy to the world. The year is 2043. Empowered by the anti-encryption program, ICALL, and the world-wide wireless Blanket, the Global Domain reigns over all colocation centres with its Connectivist ideology, enforcing mandatory online activity for every eartizen and disabling attempts to secure privacy. The Domain's slogans are: "Secrecy Threatens Security" and "Privacy Prevents Prosperity and Peace." From his death-bed in New Zealand, Fenton Ouvert commissions his sons, Topia and Lukan, to locate a flash drive containing the files of Jeremy Winterton, files stolen thirty years earlier from international surveillance agencies. A former investigative journalist, Ouvert hid the flash drive at the end of a chain of clue-bearers around the world. Contacted by the resistance movement known as Arachne, Ouvert believes the drive contains original plans for the ICALL program and thus, hope for a free world. Travelling the globe, the Ouvert boys locate the links, but what will their journey reveal about their father and the effects of the Global Domain's dominance? And what will their quest mean for the world when they reach the end of the chain? "If George Orwell wrote a Hardy Boys story . . . it would be 'The Chain'." - Nix Whittaker, author of the 'Glyph Warrior' series

In the town of Te Kauhanga ... Montreal Perec is an accomplished cartographer with unusual powers of perception. He lives as a recluse in his lighthouse-like home, determined to locate the treasure of his ancestors. Sharon Pellerine works for the local council. An attractive woman, she is desired by various rural and municipal courters, until they discover her sad secret. Stanley Kowalczyk is an insurance adjuster with an obsession with straight lines and a weakness for beautiful women. These characters' lives revolve around the apparently perishing tree of Taumata-an enormous tree, one of the legendary legs of Tane Mahuta and a taonga to local Maori. As debate rages in the township about the tree's future, Perec is led closer to his treasure by the activities of his fellow residents. Te Kauhanga is a highly entertaining and mysterious tale of spaces that examines how our position and movement in this world influence others. "This book races along. Amazing characters, whacky as hell, brilliantly structured and hugely entertaining." - James Russell, author of The Dragon Brothers Trilogy
Alexia is a law student escaping the Greek family that stifles her, and Isaiah is a young Maori returning home to find the family he's lost. Cut loose from their own cultures, they have volunteered to help Isaiah's Taranaki iwi get rid of the fracking that's devastating their land and water. The deeper Alexia and Isaiah go into the fight, the closer they get to understanding the different worlds they inhabit. But when a protest march becomes violent a boundary is crossed, and they need to decide where they stand and fast. It's clear the police have been tipped off, and the activists gathered at the marae suspect they're being watched or, worse, there is an informant in the group. Can Alexia and Isaiah be trusted? And more - can they trust themselves?
As a child I knew Malcolm, who was then a young man. Dad often invited him home for meals. Malcolm was one of the 'lost children' forgotten or abandoned by their families. We followed his story from childhood to adulthood as best we could even after he was eventually discharged back into the community. When considering the tragedy and abuse of Malcolm's wasted earlier years, it is a story of immeasurable sadness. Yet he ultimately rose above it all, and with admirable strength, courage and innate resilience, was finally able to free 'the regular boy within' as he had always wanted. I was raised within the community of the Seacliff Mental Hospital village so it was difficult to know where fiction ended and the greater truth took over. To separate the truths from the almost-truths at this stage would be an impossible task as many of those concerned have died. Therefore I have blended together various stories as representative of our family and friends' combined belief of what most probably did happen during the period covered. Wherever possible, I've used correct dates, names and places. When there is doubt I've changed names and details for the protection of those still living. This is Malcolm's story as I believe it unfolded.
