"Beginning with a comprehensive scoping of the theoretical literature on race and social difference, the book delivers a meticulous examination of how the 'logic of race' is played out in the lives of post-apartheid South African school students. Based in two decades of empirical research, this compelling and insightful analysis reveals how the ongoing preoccupation with race not only obscures, but also prevents the evolution of new ways of understanding privilege and subordination."--Pages [4] of cover.
This book celebrates two important aspects of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. (1) For those involved in any aspect of Olympism, and particularly coaches and athletes, London 2012 was about realising dreams, achieving success and participating in competitive sport at the highest level. This book sets out some of these dreams and the part coaches play in this. (2) The book also looks at the notion of ‘coaching-for-performance’ and does this from an international and multi-sport perspective. From interviews with Olympic coaches, the experiences of those working in the field of high performance and from applied sport researchers, the book uses the metaphor of the ‘coach-as-alchemist’ in order to capture the dynamics of coach-athlete relationships and performance. Sports such as diving, swimming, gymnastics, skiing are included as well as individual and team sports. The book is set within the context of elite sport, high performance and coaching. Its contents illuminate two important kinds of reflective practice: (a) Reflection-ON-action (b) Reflection-FOR-action. The style of presentation includes narratives, reflective conversations, ethnographic work, interview analysis and video-clips available on-line. This book was published as a special issue of Reflective Practice.
Finding the right successor to a well-loved founder or president is often the most difficult task an organization faces-and the challenge is even greater for family-run businesses. From mom-and-pop grocery stores to vast multinationals, family-owned companies dominate the worldwide business landscape, yet surprisingly few are successfully passed down from one generation to the next, and fewer still reach the third generation intact. Author Ivan Lansberg, an organizational psychologist who grew up in a family business, explores the reasons behind this high failure rate, and reveals the conditions that allow family businesses to endure through the generations. Family enterprises are highly personal, says Lansberg, and many elaborate succession plans are thwarted because deeper psychological factors are overlooked. Lansberg stresses the need for families to share a common "dream" for their company, much like a business has a unified mission. Succeeding Generations helps us to understand all aspects-the practical and the emotional-of the succession process, as Lansberg offers advice on how to mentor successors, how to set up a systematic selection process, and how to make the best use of the board of directors during times of transition. He also provides the first clear assessment of the different options, from direct successions between a parent and a single appointed heir to more complex partnerships between siblings and cousins. With a wealth of examples from companies in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, Succeeding Generations provides a thoughtful and comprehensive look at the sensitive dynamics of leadership succession in family businesses. Planning for continuity is a life-long process for families in business, and Succeeding Generations is the first book to provide in-depth answers to the questions that arise at every stage in the evolution of the family firm.
Life can be interesting when you know and play by the rules but it can also be a burden and a tiresome routine through ignorance or simply refusing to live by the rules. Life is a game and like any known game, there are rules that must be followed to guarantee success. It is more profitable and rewarding to learn and live by the rules of life than trying to make a headway without them. Many of the challenges and setbacks we face in life are self-imposed through wrong lifestyles or ignorance of the basic principles of life. Several studies have been carried out on successful people with remarkable findings showing there are basic rules and principles that they all followed through the centuries to produce the outstanding results they had.Among other life principles and requirements for a blissful life is the need of having a compelling dream and working towards realizing it. It's one thing to have a dream, its entirely a different thing to realize your dream and in-between are laid several vital rules, principles and actions that guarantee success.Either we acknowledge it or not, everyone has a dream. The dream might have been dusty, rumpled or even forgotten, but everyone either has a dream or once had a dream. Life without a dream is quite boring and burdensome. A dream, especially a compelling dream, makes life fun and worth living. This book is aimed at helping you revive those dreams and show you the proven universal principles that will guarantee the realization of your dream. Every chapter is a buildup on the preceding ones in order to give you a holistic view of what a dream is, why you need to live your dream and how you can transform your dream into reality.I wish you success and a dramatic shift for good as you flip through the pages of this book. Happy reading!
