Markan scholars have noticed a proliferation of approaches to the study of the First Gospel, thus demanding a new assessment of the current research. Simple enumeration, however, is not enough. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been an increasing need to examine each method's added value to the better understanding of Mark's Gospel. In this volume, forty-two researchers reflect on the success of the various approaches. The book can be read as a dialogue between scholars. It integrates their reflections on methodology, specific passages, and particular topics of the Gospel. It also combines important aspects of the Gospel's history, narratology, reception, inter-textuality, composition, and theology with themes such as the messianic secret, the Kingdom of God, the disciple's role, the passion, the resurrection, and its open ending. After almost two millennia, Mark's enigmatic story about Jesus has generated more interest than ever before. The volume contains the proceedings of the Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense held at Leuven in July 2017.
Scholars have long understood that the texts we now know as the Gospels were read aloud in the Greco-Roman world, but few have actually envisioned what a performance of the Gospel of Mark would have been like in the first century and how it would have shaped the experience of its audience. Proclaiming the Gospel shows us. Oral performances in the New Testament world were lively affairs. In the performance of Greco-Roman theater, readers lose their voices from the stress of emotional passages. Audiences cheer for philosophers as if at a rock concert, and in law courts, they are paid for their responses. Storytellers compete for attention with jugglers, and some speakers must fend off hostile crowds. Congregations at churches and synagogues cheer as if at the theater. Shiner reveals the ways that Mark wrote his Gospel to compete in this arena and how his audiences would have responded: applause for the miracles of Jesus, then an altogether different response at the cross. This edited volume brings Ahn Byung-Mu's minjung theology into dialogue with twenty-first-century readers. Ahn Byung-Mu was one of the pioneers of Korean minjung theology. The centerpiece of his minjung theology is focused on the Greek word ochlos, understood as the divested, marginalized, powerless people. Part 1 introduces readers to his life and theological legacy. Part 2 includes four important writings of Ahn Byung-Mu: "Jesus and Minjung in the Gospel of Mark," "Minjung Theology in the Gospel of Mark," "The Transmitters of Jesus Event Tradition," and "Minjok, Minjung, and Church." Part 3 contains a collection of articles from international scholars who evaluate and engage Ahn's ochlos/minjung theology in their own fields and formulate critical readings of minjung theology. Responses include postcolonial, black theology, and feminist perspectives.
Despite virtually unanimous patristic association of the Gospel of Mark with the apostle Peter, the Gospel was mostly neglected by those same writers. Michael J. Kok surveys the second-century reception of Mark, from Papias of Hierapolis to Clement of Alexandria, and finds that the patristic writers were hesitant to embrace Mark because they perceived it to be too easily adapted to rival Christian factions. Kok describes the story of Marks Petrine origins as a second-century move to assert ownership of the Gospel on the part of the emerging Orthodox Church.
