Random Thoughts: Food for the Mind and Thoughts with No Answers are the two main reasons for writing this book. At times, we all need someone to talk to or someone to listen to us, but there’s no one around or no one who cares. This book offers you ways to answer your own questions and rely on yourself to make a righteous decision for yourself. This book offers a piece of reality with a spiritual twist and an understanding of how to deal with other people. Random Thoughts will give you the answer to questions in your mind that you want to ask or may be looking for in all the wrong places. It can say the things you feel you can’t say. This book gives the assurance that you’re not alone in this world and that we all go through some of the same obstacles, trials and tribulations in life as others, but we deal with them in many different ways. Its job is to open you up to new ideas and to open your mind to other ways to deal with life’s struggles, and it will help you express how you feel to a loved one when you’re at a loss for words. Random Thoughts is an empowering, uplifting, guiding book, and it teaches how to show love and be loved. Most of all, it shows you how to keep the faith in yourself to live a better and more fruitful life with our God as your guide.

RANDOM THOUGHTS OF A CREATIVE MIND is a collection of all of Hassel's writings that have been submitted literally since grade school to present time, including one short story delivered in a big writing class that scandalized some, left others howling with laughter, and the remainder thinking quietly as they left for home. Her take on life is unique having grown up on a farm doing heavy labor with her father on and around heavy equipment. She is quite a horsewoman, and above all, she would say, "What you see is what you get." Hassel is also a fine painter (see cover art), and a gifted amateur dancer enpointe and modern. Sue Hassel grew up on a farm in Wisconsin, attended the UW, Madison, and then went to Europe. Her mother Elenora was a homemaker (who designed and sewed clothes for friends and family). Her father, Carl was an oil trucker for 41 years, a natural horseman and very gifted and humane in handling horses and all animals. Both parents had 8th grade educations. Both of their lives exceeded their educational levels. Sue has an older sister, Beverly, former Professor of piano at UW, Oshkosh, who is the real pianist in the family. Sue considers herself the hotdog pianist. She has to have fun playing piano, i.e. the virtuoso repertoire. www.suehassel.com
This book was written so the author would also smile. Random Thoughts is a link to the daily life of a thinking brain. Every reader should recognize themselves somewhere in these pages.

My name is Norman Lawrence Rowlston, and the following poems represent my thoughts and ideas on all that has happened to me over the last 30 years. After a considerable period of illness, which culminated in a heart transplant in 1996, I decided to try my hand at writing. Some 20 or more of the poems have been published by companies in the USA and in the UK. In America, the main publisher of my works is the International Society of Poets, and in the UK the main one is United Press. Several of my poems are reflections of time spent on the way to and in hospital at certain times; the main one of these is an ode of tribute to the nursing staff, and that is the one entitled Angels of the Night. Although not a sufferer of Alzheimer's disease, I was asked to produce a couple of poems for publishing in their newsletters, including Unseen Images. Marching was written to show support for the Rural Life Association. Justice was in answer to the letting off of a Judge without any response after he had committed a crime. A Dying Breed was a cry from the heart after the butchery of the mining industry by Margaret Thatcher. This was dear to my heart as I have lived most of my life in a heavily endowed mining area, now defunct. I also worked down the pit on two periods. Love is a tribute to my wife of 37 years, Joan, whilst A Prayer to Love was written specifically for the wedding of one of my step grandchildren. The poem was read out during the church service by my eldest grandson. Graduation was written to show my pride in my son and daughter on graduating from University. 9/11 was the idea behind Pray for America. This was published in some newspapers in both America and Hawaii. There are a few poems which may sound strange to your ears, but they are literally correct as they have been written in Yorkshire dialect, a mode I intend to do more in. Nonsense poetry is included with two of the ones I wrote for a children's magazine, and they are Snow and The Obligatatum. The Tramp is based on a true story from this area. All the artwork contained in this booklet has been produced by my wife, Joan Rowlston. Please read and enjoy; half of the joy of writing is knowing that someone else is also getting pleasure from your efforts.
Excerpts of Preface... The brain is a mysterious thing. It is active all day long. It never stops functioning even during our sleep. It is easily among the most used organ of our body regardless whether we are consciously controlling it at any given moment or not. But what also strikes me about the brain is its seeming randomness of direction, especially when we are not actively directing it. One moment we are thinking of the day's tasks at hand, the next moment it's about that summer 10 years ago when we had a good time with friends and family. One moment I am writing this introduction, and seconds later, I am thinking about that reunion with some college friends to catch up with a few days from now. (No, it's not just attention span deficit syndrome, okay?) This is why it is fascinating to me how our minds work. We are never really in full control of it. Whether we are reading a book, watching a movie, or talking to someone, our mind may wander off without warning to places where we've been, or destinations where we might want to be. To events we'd like to remember, to unfortunate experiences we'd rather forget if not delete from our brain. This collection of random thoughts might feel like that. It has absolutely no order or theme that can tie it all together. Just as the brain may not have a unifying train of thought during long stretches of time. It reads as randomly as the brain frequently works. Some are funny, some may sound sanctimonious, some are reflections, some are sarcastic, some are practical advices, and some are just thoughts not meant to be taken too seriously. Hopefully, however, all are worthwhile reads and that you'll enjoy the ride on the many trains of thoughts inside.
