The objective of the conference was to identify the ethical issues in relation to biotechnology from a multidisciplinary and multicultural perspective in the hope of promoting open public debate. The subjects covered were: human health; food; the environment; animal welfare; research; industry; north-south relations; and public perception. The conference sought to identify appropriate ways of dealing with ethical issues and lay the basis for a harmonised approach at international level that could result in a possible new convention.
