This report presents the first comprehensive summaries of Quaternary geology and landscape evolution for the Melville Peninsula, glaciated by the Wisconsin Laurentide Ice. After an introduction on the bedrock geology and physiography of the study area, sections of the report describe the area's surficial materials and landforms, including till, glaciofluvial and glaciolacustrine deposits and landforms, marine deposits and landforms; dispersal trains and ice dynamics; glaciation and ice flow in the study area; deglaciation of the various parts of the peninsula; glacial and postglacial sea-level changes, and their interpretation; the regional context of glaciation and sea-level change; the economic and environmental geology of Quaternary materials such as permafrost and patterned ground forms; postglacial faulting and neotectonics; and till geochemistry, with reference to drift prospecting models.
This report results from an investigation of the Quaternary geology & geomorphology of the south half of Melville Peninsula, Nunavut. The purpose of the investigation was to map the area systematically in order to determine the distribution, character, & origin of surface materials and to reconstruct the Quaternary history of the area. The first part provides background information on previous research, bedrock geology, and physiography of the area. The next part describes the nature & distribution of surficial materials & landforms, including information on their physical properties, texture, & composition along with interpretation of their mode of formation. A subsequent section on present geomorphic processes addresses topics of particular interest to environmental concerns & land management. The final section emphasizes those elements that concern mineral exploration, specifically the provenance of till, directions & distances of glacial transport, concentrations of elements in till, and their relationship to bedrock geology.

This report completes a project designed to study the Quaternarygeology of central Melville Island including Dundas Peninsula. It contains descriptions of surficial materials together with anoutline of the Quaternary history with particular emphasis onlate Quaternary glacial and marine events. Dundas Peninsula isof particular interest since continental ice sheets reached theirmaximum limits in this area on several occasions. A particularlyimportant reason for examining south-central Melville Island isthe projected routing (at the time of writing) of one or morenatural gas transportation systems through it. Nonetheless, thisstudy is not designed to provide geotechnical information for anyone project, but rather to provide information relevant toengineering, land management, or environmental impact studies, aswell as regional Quaternary studies.
