Economic archaeology is the study of how past peoples exploited animals and plants, using as evidence the remains of those animals and plants. The animal side is usually termed zooarchaeology, the plant side archaeobotany. What distinguishes them from other studies of ancient animals and plants is that their ultimate aim is to find out about human behaviour – the animal and plant remains are a means to this end. The 33 papers present a wide array of topics covering many areas of archaeological interest. Aspects of method and theory, animal bone identification, human palaeopathology, prehistoric animal utilisation in South America, and the study of dog cemeteries are covered. The long-running controversy over the milking of animals and the use of dairy products by humans is discussed as is the ecological impact of hunting by farmers, with studies from Serbia and Syria. 00 This study presents current data on vertebrate survival and extinction across the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary in Montana. Nearly all the common taxa of reptiles (except dinosaurs), amphibians, and fish survived the end of the Cretaceous Period; extinctions were concentrated among rare groups and those found in near-shore habitats. The author concludes that ocean regression and climatic deterioration may explain these selective extinction patterns better than catastrophic hypotheses. Taphonomic studies are a major methodological advance, the effects of which have been felt throughout archaeology. Zooarchaeologists and archaeobotanists were the first to realise how vital it was to study the entire process of how food enters the archaeological record, and taphonomy brought to a close the era when the study of animal bones and plant remains from archaeological sites were regarded mainly as environmental indicators. This volume is indicative of recent developments in taphonomic studies: hugely diverse research areas are being explored, many of which would have been totally unforeseeable only a quarter of a century ago.
Emerging technologies are opening new avenues for the study of past and present ecosystems. Computer-aided visualization and analysis of fossil specimens through X-ray tomography has revolutionized the study of organisms. X-ray tomography, or X-ray computed tomography, is a characterization technique for generating 3D information from 2-dimensional X-ray image slices. X-ray imaging is based on the differential absorption or scattering of an X-ray source to reveal internal attributes of biological specimens. High-resolution tomography can retrieve compositional and structural information of small objects or the macrostructure of larger objects non-destructively, allowing fossils to be characterized in three dimensions and in unprecedented detail. This has enabled paleontologists to gain important insights into the anatomy, development, and preservation of specimens. The resulting digital 3D reconstructions can be used in functional analyses to test hypotheses regarding the paleobiology of extinct organisms that could transform our understanding of long-studied fossil groups, and the narratives of organismal and ecological evolution. Furthermore, this proliferation of digital datasets should make the widespread sharing and dissemination of 3D data possible, providing access to rare fossil material worldwide.
