The objectives of HSNMC 2004 (International Conference on High Speed Networks and Multimedia Communications) were to promote research and development activities and to encourage communication between academic researchers and engineers throughout the world in the areas related to high-speed networks and multimedia communications. The seventh edition of HSNMC was held in Toulouse, France, on June 30– July2,2004. Therewere266submissionstoHSNMCthisyearfrom34countries, which were evaluated by program committee members assisted by external - viewers. Each paper was reviewed by several reviewers. One hundred and one papers were selected to be included in these proceedings. The quality of s- missions was high, and the committee had to decline some papers worthy for publication. We arehappy to welcome you to the IFIP Protocols for High-Speed Networks '96 workshop hosted by INRIA Sophia Antipolis. This is the fifth event in a series initiated in Zurich in 1989 followed by Palo Alto (1990), Stockholm (1993), and Vancouver (1994). This workshop provides an international forum for the exchange of information on protocols for high-speed networks. The workshop focus on problems related to the e:fficient transmission of multimedia application data using high-speed networks and internetworks. Protocol for High-Speed Networks is a "working conference". That explains we have privileged high quality papers describing on-going research and novel ideas. The number of selected papers was kept low in order to leave room for discussion on each paper. Together with the technical sessions, working sessions were organized on hot topics. We would like to thank all the authors for their interest. We also thank the Program Committee members for the Ievel of effort in the reviewing process and in the workshop technical program organization. We finally thank INRIA and DRET for their financial support to the organization of the workshop.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Network Control and Engineering for Quality of Service, Security and Mobility (Net-Con'2004), celebrated in Palma de Mallorca (Illes Balears, Spain) during November 2-5, 2004. This IFIP TC6 Conference was organized by the Universitat de les Illes Balears and sponsored by the following Working Groups: WG6.2 (Network and Internetwork Architectures), WG6.6 (Management of Networks and Distributed Systems), WG6.7 (Smart Networks) and WG6.8 (Mobile and Wireless Communications). The rapid evolution of the networking industry introduces new exciting challenges that need to be explored by the research community. The adoption of Internet as the global network infrastructure places the issue of quality of service among one of the hot topics nowadays: a huge diversity of applications with quite different service requirements must be supported over a basic core of protocols. Also, the open and uncontrolled nature of Internet enforces the need to guarantee secure transactions among users, thus placing security as another hot topic. Finally, the explosion of mobility and its integration as part of the global infrastructure are probably now the most challenging issues in the networking field.
On behalf of the Organizing and Program Committees of the 3rd European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN 2004), it is our great pleasure to introduce the proceedings of ECUMN 2004, which was held during October 25–27, 2004, in Porto, Portugal. In response to the Call for Papers, a total of 131 papers were submitted from 29 countries. Each paper was reviewed by several members of the Technical Program Committee or by external peer reviewers. After careful assessment of thereviews,53paperswereacceptedforpresentationin13technicalsessions;half of them originated from countries outside Europe (mainly Asia). This illustrates the strong interest of this conference beyond its original geographical area. The conference program covered a variety of leading-edge research topics which are of current interest, such as wireless networks, mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, mobility management, optical networks, quality of service and tra?c, transport protocols, real-time and multimedia, Internet technologies and applications, overlay and virtual private networks, security and privacy, and network operations and management. Together with three plenary sessions from France T ́ el ́ ecom, Siemens, and Cisco Systems, these technical presentations - dressed the latest research results from the international industry and academia and reported on ?ndings on present and future multiservice networks.
