Excerpt from Putnam's Monthly, Vol. 1: A Magazine of Literature, Science, and Art; January-June, 1853 If a true statement has been the situation of Cuban affairs, Cuba has a right to attempt her freedom. Taking what has been said for truth, a case is made out which would justify Cuba by the unanimous voice of mankind for the act of revolution. For it is a safe proposition to submit to the civilized world, that no nation shall Oppress by any arbitriļ¬‚'y oi' tyrannical despotism a dependent country or colony. Although the means of re dress may not always be at hand, no one dis utes the right of the Oppressed to see for or to use them. Excerpt from Putnam's Magazine, Vol. 1: Original Papers on Literature, Science, Art, and National Interests; January-June, 1868 A word as to the general plan of our work. In the preliminary announcement, its leading object was set forth to be the discussion of questions of Public Policy, Religion and Education, Science and Art, Industrial Pursuits, Finance, Political Economy, and Social Science; with ample provision for the various departments of general Literature in Fiction, Poetry, Essays, and other forms. Already, within the com pass of a single volume, examples of all of these have been given, in numerous instances, from the pens of writers of well-proved and emi nent ability. These subjects will be pursued hereafter under similar advantages, with a freedom and breadth of treatment commensurate with the enlightened demands of the day. Excerpt from Putnam's Monthly and the Critic, Vol. 1: A Magazine of Literature, Art and Life; October, 1906-March, 1907 The rest survives only in this dusty crypt of darkened forms and faces, this set of the bound files of the old putnam's. One may, and perhaps even must, agree with the rhymer that his design was a mistake, and that the subject ought to be continued in prose, without on that account being willing to let the verse altogether die. It stands to reason that young Lowell could not have written two thousand lines or so of verse without falling upon felicities worthy of preservation, however mis taken the design may have been or, for that matter, however irrelevant and obscuring the very beauties may have been to the design. The thing is worth rescue and reprint, and I com mend it to you. As to the random felicities, take this one for an example.
