This is the first study to examine women in leadership within the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government in international security. The number of women in leadership roles in national security and foreign policy has certainly improved in the past decade. What is the effect of more women in leadership positions in government - on the institution, on younger women, on decision-making? And why do women continue to remain under-represented in many senior-level positions? Are there hidden blockages to women's advancement? How can women better prepare for and be encouraged to take on these roles in the future? These are some of the questions WIIS set out to explore in interviews with more than 90 mid- and senior-level women from key U.S. Government agencies (including the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Agency for International Development, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security) for this project.
This book offers an accessible overview of the multiple, interdependent issues related to the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) global agenda. The first introductory overview of the WPS agenda as articulated in multiple national and international resolutions, statements, and initiatives, the book provides a link between the general public and security practitioners to an important but still largely unknown set of global objectives regarding gender equality and long-term peace and stability. Within the context of the changing nature of warfare, and through consideration of empirical evidence, the volume examines the definitions, theoretical underpinnings and methodological challenges associated with WPS. It then discusses with more specificity violence against women, women civilians in war, the role of women in peacemaking, women in the military and in development, and women politicians. The book concludes with a look to the future and number of action items from the macro to the micro level. While challenges and opportunities related to the WPS agenda are global, US policy action and inaction related to WPS and gender equality are provided as examples of what politically needs to be done, has been done, and obstacles to WPS furtherance potentially to be encountered by all countries. This book will be of much interest to students of peace studies, security studies, gender studies and IR.
The Face of the Nation studies women's leadership and gender relations across some of the worst performing and most male-dominated spheres of state--international affairs. Exploring the stories from almost 80 global women leaders, as well as institutional histories and policies across diplomacy, defense, national security, policing, and intelligence, this book seeks to understand why women remain under-represented on the global stage, despite many changing social and policy norms. The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda is comprised of the policies, protocols and practices enacted by a wide range of actors inspired by, or under the auspices, of the UN Security Council resolutions adopted under the title of ‘women and peace and security’. Since the adoption of the first resolution in 2000, resolution 1325, there have been nine others, each of which elaborates or extends aspects of the original resolution. This book provides a forward-looking collection of scholarship on the WPS agenda in two halves. The first half of the book presents a series of essays that each provide a glimpse of the rich and insightful research on WPS being undertaken in and about different contexts, to demonstrate the importance of centring the "local" as a site of knowledge production in the WPS agenda. The essays presented in the second half of the book also engage questions of knowledge production, documenting the exploratory methods in use in WPS scholarship, and highlighting those topics engaged at the hinterlands of what is a broad field – topics that gesture at the future of research in this area. The chapters in this book were originally published as special issues of the International Feminist Journal of Politics.

God created man and woman equally. It is not that woman is inferior to man. Man and woman differ is physique, woman is delicate, man is physically strong, and this gave an upper hand to man. Might is Right was always the order of the day. It led to the open violence against woman. Woman could not raise her voice, could not protest, for the sake of the fear of being thrown out of the house. It was the feeling of insecurity that compel woman for subordination. Man wanted to maintain the status quo and was not willing to change in favor of woman. It took ages to convince that, to deny woman the rights she deserves is not only the violation of Human Rights but the main cause of world poverty. The U. N. O. and other international agencies have been trying hard to pass on this message to the community at large. Most of the countries have agreed to commit themselves to this new philosophy. But there is a big gap between preaching and practice. It is easy to amend the laws but difficult to bring an attitudinal change. This is the challenge, the world is facing today. Our efforts should be to bring this change as smoothly as possible. Woman has to come forward to take up this challenge. But she has to be very calculative in her struggle for achieving these objectives, without disturbing the peace.
