Land Policy and Urban Growth explores the relationships between urban growth patterns, land prices, and land policies in countries with market economies. The effects of the peculiar character of the private land market on land prices are discussed, along with the link between market mechanisms and government intervention in the urban-growth process. Comprised of 18 chapters, this book begins with a brief survey of patterns of urban growth, with emphasis on the high rate of urban expansion and what future land needs might be in urban areas. The next section is concerned with urban land prices in industrialized and developing countries and highlights the dramatic increases in urban land prices arising from urban development. Various theories of urban land-price formation are examined, together with public policies on urban land and their impact not only on the land market but also on land supply and allocation. Housing for Special Groups contains the proceedings of an international seminar held in the Netherlands on November 8-13, 1976 under the auspices of the Committee on Housing, Building and Planning of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The seminar provided a forum for discussing the special housing requirements of certain groups, including the elderly and the handicapped. The emphasis is on the scope and size of special housing problems and their likely future evolution, as well as the general lines of approach adopted by various countries to tackle these problems. Building Research Policies contains the proceedings of a seminar on Building Research Policies held in Gävle, Sweden, on May 23-27, 1977, under the auspices of the Committee on Housing, Building and Planning of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. The seminar provided a forum for discussing policies for research and development work with respect to building materials, components, and construction. This book explores the various ways and means of planning, organizing, coordinating, and financing building research and development activities on the national level, taking into account both the short- and long-term needs of society. While the main emphasis is on governmental measures to support research activities carried out by universities, research organizations, and independent experts, the steps taken to help research and development in the building materials and construction industries, for example by fiscal action or aid to education and training activities, are also taken into account. The promotion of the use of research and development findings both nationally and internationally, and the methods by which international collaboration might stimulate research and development within countries and make it more efficient, are explored as well.
