This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th IAPR TC3 International Workshop on Artificial Neural Networks in Pattern Recognition, ANNPR 2018, held in Siena, Italy, in September 2018. The 29 revised full papers presented together with 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 35 submissions. The papers present and discuss the latest research in all areas of neural network- and machine learning-based pattern recognition. They are organized in two sections: learning algorithms and architectures, and applications. Chapter "Bounded Rational Decision-Making with Adaptive Neural Network Priors" is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
The world is witnessing the rapid evolution of its own nervous system by an unparalleled growth in communication technology. Like the evolution of the nervous systems in animals, this growth is being driven by a survival-of-the-fittest-mechanism. In telecommunications, the entities that fuel this growth are companies and nations who compete with each other. Companies with superior information systems can outrun and outsmart others because they serve their customers better. On the threshold of an explosion in the variety, speed and usefulness of telecommunication networks, neural network researchers can make important contributions to this emerging new telecommunications infrastructure. The first International Workshop on Applications of Neural Networks to Telecommunications (IWANNT) was planned in response to the telecommunications industry's needs for new adaptive technologies. This workshop featured 50 talks and posters that were selected by an organizing committee of experts in both telecommunications and neural networks. These proceedings will also be available on-line in an electronic format providing multimedia figures, cross-referencing, and annotation.
Neural Network Dynamics is the latest volume in the Perspectives in Neural Computing series. It contains papers presented at the 1991 Workshop on Complex Dynamics in Neural Networks, held at IIASS in Vietri, Italy. The workshop encompassed a wide range of topics in which neural networks play a fundamental role, and aimed to bridge the gap between neural computation and computational neuroscience. The papers - which have been updated where necessary to include new results - are divided into four sections, covering the foundations of neural network dynamics, oscillatory neural networks, as well as scientific and biological applications of neural networks. Among the topics discussed are: A general analysis of neural network activity; Descriptions of various network architectures and nodes; Correlated neuronal firing; A theoretical framework for analyzing the behaviour of real and simulated neuronal networks; The structural properties of proteins; Nuclear phenomenology; Resonance searches in high energy physics; The investigation of information storage; Visual cortical architecture; Visual processing. Neural Network Dynamics is the first volume to cover neural networks and computational neuroscience in such detail. Although it is primarily aimed at researchers and postgraduate students in the above disciplines, it will also be of interest to researchers in electrical engineering, medicine, psychology and philosophy.
The textbook aims to present general relativity and modern cosmology in a friendly form suitable for advanced undergraduates. The text begins with a self-contained introduction to the theory of manifolds and then develops the tools needed to understand curved spaces and curved spacetimes. Special relativity can then be understood in a geometrical context, bypassing some of the difficulties students have when encountering relativistic effects (e.g. time dilation and length contraction) for the first time. The theory of curvature and its effects leads to the Einstein field equations and its classic tests in the precession of Mercury and the deflection of starlight. The second part of the book covers modern cosmology, starting with the evolution equations for the expansion of the universe. The microwave background, evidence for dark matter, and the clustering of galaxies are examined in detail.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Machine Learning for Medical Reconstruction, MLMIR 2020, held in conjunction with MICCAI 2020, in Lima, Peru, in October 2020. The workshop was held virtually. The 15 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 18 submissions. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: deep learning for magnetic resonance imaging and deep learning for general image reconstruction.

The proceedings of this workshop include invited lectures by Professors Stan Gielen and Lotfi Zadeh. The workshop was the last to be organised by the late Professor Eduardo R. Cainello, known worldwide for his fundamental contributions to cybernetics and theoretical physics, and to whom this volume is dedicated.
