This book gathers a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the 2nd International Conference on Experimental and Computational Mechanics in Engineering (ICECME 2020), held as a virtual conference and organized by Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh, Indonesia, on 13–14 October 2020. The contributions, prepared by international scientists and engineers, cover the latest advances in computational mechanics, metallurgy and material science, energy systems, manufacturing processing systems, industrial and system engineering, biomechanics, artificial intelligence, micro/nano-engineering, micro-electro-mechanical system, machine learning, mechatronics, and engineering design. The subject of coupled instabilities is a fascinating field of research with a wide range of practical applications, particularly in the analysis and design of metal structures. Despite the excellent body of existing results concerning coupled instability structural behaviour, this situation has not yet been adequately translated into design rules or specifications. In fact, only to a small extent do modern design codes for metal structures take advantage of the significant progress made in the field. This book, which contains all the invited general reports and selected papers presented at the Third International Conference on "Coupled Instabilities in Metal Structures". (CIMS '2000), should provide a meaningful contribution towards filling the gap between research and practice.
This book contains 71 papers presented at the symposium on “Recent Advances in Experimental Mechanics” which was organized in honor of Professor Isaac M. Daniel. The symposium took place at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on th June 23-28, 2002, in conjunction with the 14 US National Congress of Applied Mechanics. The book is a tribute to Isaac Daniel, a pioneer of experimental mechanics and composite materials, in recognition of his continuous, original, diversified and outstanding contributions for half a century. The book consists of invited papers written by leading experts in the field. It contains original contributions concerning the latest developments in experimental mechanics. It covers a wide range of subjects, including optical methods of stress analysis (photoelasticity, moiré, etc.), composite materials, sandwich construction, fracture mechanics, fatigue and damage, nondestructive evaluation, dynamic problems, fiber optic sensors, speckle metrology, digital image processing, nanotechnology, neutron diffraction and synchrotron radiation methods. The papers are arranged in the following nine sections: Mechanical characterization of material behavior, composite materials, fracture and fatigue, optical methods, n- destructive evaluation, neutron diffraction and synchrotron radiation methods, hybrid methods, composite structures, and structural testing and analysis.
This book addresses the problems of fracture mechanics of materials with cracks under the loading directed along the cracks. It considers two non-classical fracture mechanisms, namely the fracture of bodies compressed along cracks and the fracture of materials with initial (residual) stresses acting in parallel to the surfaces of cracks location, and presents new approaches (also including combined one) developed in the framework of three-dimensional linearized mechanics of deformable bodies. It then discusses the results of studies on two- and three-dimensional problems for various configurations of crack locations in isotropic and anisotropic materials, and based on these results, critically evaluates the accuracy and applicability limits of the “beam approximation” approach, which is widely used to study various problems of the fracture of bodies under compression along parallel cracks.
ICTAEM_1 treated all aspects of theoretical, applied and experimental mechanics including biomechanics, composite materials, computational mechanics, constitutive modeling of materials, dynamics, elasticity, experimental mechanics, fracture, mechanical properties of materials, micromechanics, nanomechanics, plasticity, stress analysis, structures, wave propagation. During the conference special symposia covering major areas of research activity organized by members of the Scientific Advisory Board took place. ICTAEM_1 brought together the most outstanding world leaders and gave attendees the opportunity to get acquainted with the latest developments in the area of mechanics. ICTAEM_1 is a forum of university, industry and government interaction and serves in the exchange of ideas in an area of utmost scientific and technological importance.
The current situation with regard to the use of high-performance composites is one of seeking a reliable means of characterizing the fundamental properties and/or behavior of composite materials. The employment of such materials in vi tal structural applications require criteria as part of the materials selection and design procedures. However, the principal limitation of the many currently available procedures, most of which were borrowed from the metal i"ndustry, is its intrinsic restriction to single phase materials. They cannot adequately ac count for the variations in the constituents or structure of the composite that can have a significant influence on its gross behavior. Although a considerable amount of research has been conducted in the past with the objective of under standing composite material behavior, for the most part, the research efforts tended to cover too wide a spectrum of problems with little penetration into the fundamental aspects. For this reason, the investigators in this field have long felt the need to bring together a small group of experts to review the fun damentals, discuss the problem areas, and display the current developments. The USA-USSR Sympo~~ on the f~ct~e 06 Compo~~e Mat~ was organized for this purpose. There is the additional need to share this information with the new comers to the field as well as the oldtimers. This is accomplished by publish ing the symposium proceedings contained in the present volume. A Russian trans lation of the papers in this volume will also be made available.
